TW panic attacks

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a f!s user, but I'm going anon for obvious reasons.

I think that I have panic attacks. Not full-blown, long and painful ones, but the symptoms are certainly here. I believe that I can suppress them at this point (that is, when I get this weird feeling in my chest and think that I'm going to die, I start mulling over various pleasant things, or I just go and lie down; it helps).

I just need your advice, folks. Do I need to be worried if it doesn't develop into standard some-10-minutes-fits? Can it be something physiological? What shall I do about it?

As it is, I have random attacks of nausea during which I can't properly breath and am very scared. They seem to be triggered by unpleasant thoughts and images.

Sounds like a panic attack to me. They're not really the kid of thing you can cure without a doctor's visit, but just knowing what they are is very helpful. They're a real thing, they won't kill you, you'll be okay, there's just a chemical imbalance in your body. I found that just accepting this fact made my life with panic attacks much easier until I got medication.

You should go to a doctor and get properly diagnosed. If you want some advise, though, the next time it hits, take slow breaths from your nose. The feeling of not being able to breath gets worse if you take large intakes of air from your mouth, as it messes with the intake/exhale of oxygen and carbon. Remind yourself you aren't going crazy. Distract yourself or talk yourself down.

Really if it's that chronic, all you can do is talk to your doctor. I had fake heart attacks and extreme chest pain for months, to the point where I couldn't sleep because I would have extreme trouble breathing and stabbing chest pains. I went about 4 days without REM sleep and I was hallucinating and ended up in the ER (and had to pay about $900 for it because I had no insurance at the time) and it was unavoidable -- I ended up on klonopin. Which helped me sleep (that was important at the time) and I took it regularly for about a month, a really really low dose, and then weaned myself off of it. I've never been able to get counseling because LOL MENTAL ILLNESS WHAT'S THAT (<--my country's attitude towards mental illness in general), it's really difficult to find a therapist even with insurance, but if the pain is that bad, you should talk to your doctor. However, take caution with anti-anxiety meds, especially benzos, because they are habit-forming if you take them long enough and after awhile you have to sort of take a larger dose for them to even be effective. IDK, I don't find most psychiatric medication scary at all but with benzos and amphetamines I do

Pfft I forgot about thyroid -- yeah, stella is right, but if you talk to your doctor about your symptoms and they are a halfway decent doctor they will take a blood sample to check your thyroid hormones. They did that with me (and at the ER they took a blood sample to check for any and all cardiac issues, all that kind of stuff, and everything came back clear). It is important to rule out actual physical diseases before concluding that it's anxiety... but your symptoms do sound a lot like panic or anxiety disorder to me
