Actually, this depends on whether your hair is thin as in fine or thin as in sparse. Long hair is terrible for covering up sparse hair and bald spots because the length weighs the hair down, pressing it flat against the head and so making the underlying skin patches more apparent. Short hair has more volume unless it's also very fine and so obscures the sparseness.

NA- I have fine hair and it's been thinning the last few years to the point I now have a bald spot. You're right that long hair is worse for covering it; most female balding is in the front the combination of its location and the weight of the hair makes it impossible to cover. I keep my hair about 6 inches shorter now so my hair has a bit more volume and make t less noticeable.

Depending on where the bald spots are, long hair is possible! Getting layers or bangs will help prevent it from weighing down too much, so you get a little more volume to work with to cover those pesky spots. Also, while I'm sure most people with fine/sparse hair already know this, try to avoid dyeing the hair (or dyeing too often), as that can over-dry the hair and make the thinness/sparseness more obvious.

Eh, like you said, it depends on where they are. I don't have bald spots (yet :/) but I definitely have thin spots, and since mine are all in the front, it's really noticeable unless my hair is short enough to produce the volume to cover them up.
