My hair used to be super thick, but I've been really ill for the last five or so years and it's gotten very fine and delicate, and I actually find that the shorter I keep my hair the less it falls out and the less "ill" or "thin" my hair looks.

I think if it's something you're very self conscious about, find a stylist that really listens (it took me decades and another country to find one who actually listens to me) and they'll often give you all the help and advice they can.

Also, washing your hair less frequently (every other day or every two to three days), and washing it in cold or cool water as opposed to hot water will also help it fall out less during the washing process.

Seriously! I just hacked almost all my hair off and this is the best it's looked in ten years. People can't seem to stop telling me how much better this is...
