Okay OP, at first I thought "Why is this a secret? Who cares what you do and do not want to read"

Now I can see why


Yet no-one cares if you go "I just don't like rap" or "I Just don't like YA" or "I just don't like romance"

You don't even say that they're bad, you just don't like them. Yet people are jumping on you.

I would roll my eyes at someone who said they didn't like rap right after admitting they never listened to it, or YA when the only title they can name is "Twilight." I don't mind if they like it or not, but discounting such a wide and varied collection of works offhand seems silly.

I tend assume that when people say they've never tried it, they mean they've had a sample of X and didn't enjoy that sample and prefer to not waste time and just ignore the rest of it.

Not exactly a lack of alternative books/music/movies/whatever they can go enjoy instead

Maybe I should. I think I've made a secret once about disliking a particular movie. Most people's response was "You didn't like this classic movie therefore you clearly didn't understand it you plebian"

Be interesting what the reaction would be if I said I don't like to read 1st POV or 14th century stories

I know we (meaning F!S) have had the first-person discussion a couple of times, some of them pretty recently.

People do care, though, especially here. We nitpick like crazy.

Of course nowadays it would be

"I just don't like rap" = racist

"I just don't like YA" = ageist, misogynist

"I just don't like romance" = misogynist
