As a person who loves classics, I approve.

Inb4 "you can't dislike all the classics! These books have nothing in common!": perhaps OP is only into YA fiction, or sci-fi, or isn't into reading at all.

Word. I don't even get why the "Classics" are so great. I've never read War and Peace, for example, and I'm still very widely read even so and can discuss things intelligently with other people.

The idea of someone being all Judgey McJudgeypants over what books I read would annoy me.

i'm pretty sure i have that exact edition of frankenstein

and you know, i personally think 90% of "classic" literature is shit but i sincerely hope you just dug that picture up to illustrate your secret, because some of those books A) don't actually qualify as "classic literature" and B) are awesome, and you not reading a book simply because of its age doesn't make me a pretentious asshole for judging you, it just makes you shallow.

I don't give a shit what books people have read, but when people express opinions about books they HAVEN'T read and refuse to consider reading, and take pride in not wanting to learn -- then it doesn't make me think better of their intelligence, no. That applies to people who dismiss genre and romance and fanfiction, sure, but it also applies to people who dismiss 'classics,' whatever they mean by that.

But how do you know you won't like them unless you try them in the first place? I mean, it's one thing to read a classic twenty or fifty pages in and go, "Nope, not me." It's another thing to refuse a book altogether.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
But dismissing all of the classics is kind of dickish I think?

Just because you didn't enjoy Catcher In The Rye doesn't mean that you might not enjoy The Great Gatsby or To Kill A Mockingbird?

I dunno, I don't like people just writing off a whole genre without good reason.

You don't like ANY classics? But ... the classics aren't a particular genre like fantasy or sci-fi or crime novels. Hell, some of them ARE fantasy or sci-fi or crime novels or romances or whatever. I don't know anyone who loves every classic they have read. But I also don't believe that among all those thousands of very different books that are considered classics by various instances, you wouldn't like anything at all. It just seems like a really stupid reason not to read something. Don't read books because the subject doesn't interest you or because you don't like the writing, not because someone considers them a classic.

If you haven't read them, how do you know you don't like them?

I don't know if the books I'm your secret are actually representative of what you wouldn't read, but there are some authors/books I both really enjoyed (Salinger, Orwell) and some I hated (ugh, 'The Stranger' is the worst). How can you not like Aesop's Fables? Don't judge a book by its status of a classic. Ask the question: is this subject something I would enjoy?

Lets not even go into how frigging ethnocentric it is too.

I've experienced tons of people being all haughty about having read the classics and the classic children's books as if that is any sort of measure for being cultured. Sure, just go ahead judging me for not being educated for not having read Narnia or the Hobbit or whatever other classic you can think of. Cause the reason I did not read them is totally my non-education and not, like, maybe the fact that I was busy reading my own country's classics.

A lot of classics are written in a style that makes me gag while reading. Same reason I hate reading Shakespeare. I don't like iambic pentameter! I hate poetry too! Rewrite it in contemporary style and then I might be on board, because right now I have no idea what the fuck is going on!

Repeat until the end of time, because this same complaint has likely been used since the dawn of written literature.

Like what you want. I don't care. I mean, I study literature and I don't care what you like to read but I do know that there can be a huge stigma about it. I have an issue with a lot of classics myself. I'll still try them out and I do like a few but most of the time classics just make me unbelievably angry and filled with rage.

So yeah, read what you want. No one who matters will care.

Pretentious?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-02-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather gouge both my eyes out with candles than read Wuthering Heights or Ulysses again. But I also genuinely loved some of the books I was forced to do book reports on in school (The Scarlet Letter, Pride and Prejudice etc). Liking the classics doesn't make people pretentious. Acting like other people are the scum of the earth disliking the classics makes people pretentious. Alternatively, acting like other people are the scum of the earth for liking classics makes people pretentious as well.

Speaking as an English major...

...I don't actually care. Read what you like.

Looking at the books in the picture you chose, I've read some of them and they were okay, and some of the ones that I haven't read, I'd be interested in reading. But I'm only engaging in a little bit of hyperbole when I say that I would sooner eat my own fingers than read anything by Salinger or Steinbeck ever again.

I agree, OP. I read a lot of books but I just don't like classics at all. I'm really mostly into postmodern and metamodern fiction, most things before the 50's bore the everloving fuck out of me.

No one is expected to enjoy all the "Classics". But saying "I don't like classics" doesn't make sense to me because it means "I don't like any book older than fifty and considered good by experts". "Classic" isn't a genre, isn't a style. Romeo and Juliet, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, Pride and Prejudice, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Martian Chronicles ... all of them are classic and they couldn't be more different.

You know what? I am judging you OP. You're refusing the classics because what? They're "hard" to read? You're too cool for them? Some of them are wonderfully written, so, yeah, I pretty much judge anyone who refuses to read any of them. It's perfectly fine not to like all of them. (For instance, I despised The Scarlet Letter). But if you put down all of them, I assume you're not very intelligent.
