(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 03:15 am (UTC)(link)I read A LOT. If it stands still long enough, I try to read it. And I try to read many different things, not just sticking to one category (though I'll admit that fantasy is my fave!), and I'm always open for suggestions on new reading. That said... the books that I consider "the classics" are the ones that have been around a long time, that are required reading in most schools, that wind up on banned book lists, and that seem to be what all the hardcore readers gush over. When I am out shopping second hand stores, I keep an eye out for the books I think are "classic" and buy them with the Full Intention of reading later. Thing is... I try. I really, really try, but some of them just do NOT hold my attention. I give them several attempts and eventually give up. The Scarlet Letter has been sitting on my nightstand for over a year now. I had to force myself to finish Lady Chatterly's Lover. I read the first few pages of Wuthering Heights and... just, no. The Iliad put me to sleep. I did re-read Catcher in the Rye AND paid attention this time, and discovered that my feelings haven't changed since high school. I still want to punch Holden square in the face. Honestly, the only "classic" I ever read and actually enjoyed was To Kill A Mockingbird.
I'm suddenly reminded of the time I threw my copy of A Tale Of Two Cities out a window in sheer frustration. Gawd, worst English class ever.
So... it's perfectly okay, Anon, for not giving half a damn over the classics. I don't think many people do, nowadays, so you're in the majority. And that's fine. Hell, as I have discovered in my baby sister's case, it doesn't matter what you're reading as long as you ARE reading.
I'm not gonna give up on my two shelves of classics, though. *lol* I will get through them, gods willing and the creek don't rise. ;)
