Also, some of the hate-on for classics might be due to the fact that in general, one's first exposure to them is as An Assignment. Something you must read X pages of by Friday and be prepared for discussion questions.

You're not feeling it? Want to put it aside and maybe come back to it at another point in your life when you have a better perspective? Or save it to tuck in your bag for a boring train ride in case there's nothing else to read? (Plenty of books I've found myself loving that way.)

I had it crammed down my throat sideways despite a complete lack of interest, and haven't been able to stomach it since. This also applies to a few of the 'classics'. Copperfield, I'm looking at you.
