Yeah, that's a rather tired cliche of animated dads in particular. At least other sitcom boorish, loudmouth, lazy asshole husbands tend to follow the cliche through with shrewish nagging bitchy wives.

But when you do the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad thing and have an asshole married to a rather decent person? It just sort of annoys me. Seth McFarlane's mind seems a bit twisted that way. He even did it for Ted--Mila Kunis' character was a levelheaded and likable person, and Mark Wahlberg's was a boorish manchild that never considered her feelings.

There are a lot of things I'd call Homer Simpson, but "asshole" isn't one of them.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
What? H...how...I...I'm not...

I'm not trying to be rude, but...

How can you not call Homer Simpson an asshole? The guy who chokes his own kid for comedic effect as an iconic image? I get it's for laughs, but so is all of the negative behaviors of these guys. He still does it.

When it comes down to it, comedic choking aside, the show goes out of its way to show he really does care for his family and loves them deeply.

Francine may not be a shrewish naggy bitch, but she's still capable of being a pretty bad person herself.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, they're both selfish. Did you see "Shallow Vows"? Francine isn't a saint either.

I'm mostly thinking of that episode where she beat up Steve when he was asking for money for food because their new younger friends didn't think they had kids.

Or, well, that time she tried to destroy George Clooney and was obsessive enough about it to spend an entire year in Prague, learning how to do so.

Yeah, she definitely has her moments.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I know that this makes me an awful person, but I almost pissed myself laughing when Francine pretended not to know Steve, if only because of his reaction to it.

"WHY, Mommy?! I'm a PIECE of you!"

That's why I can take American Dad/Family Guy and not Simpsons. Francine and Lois are also terrible, psycho immoral people, and well matched to their spouses. Marge is just a longsuffering saint putting up with a jackass.

Yeah Francine only comes off as better because she doesn't get as much focus as Stan. He's the main character after all, so we see all of his stupidity. Francine doesn't get nearly as much screen time as Stan, but when she does she is just as awful.

Cosigned. Stan is such a douchey character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, I'm sorry that you don't appreciate this pairing, OP, but ship these two so hard! Did you ever see "Stanny Boy and Frantastic"? Throughout that entire episode they were just adorable together! Or that little song they sang parodying "We Go Together" from Grease? IT WAS SO CUTE!

I mean, yeah, Stan can be a real jerk sometimes, but Francine isn't great either. Like that episode where Francine is willing to kill a guy just so she and Stan can have more time together on their vacation? Yeah, they... kind of deserve each other. XD

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Just came to say, I was humming that stupid tune for days after seeing that episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
OMG THAT SONG. Talk about an earworm!

"We're Stan and Franny and we go together like- wait, where's Rodger?"

"The song dissolved into gibberish and I refuse to participate."

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen of this show she always seemed very confident and capable of making these kinds of decisions for herself. I know it's just a stupid show, but something about this secret rubs me the wrong way.

Francine has: wanted to punch out a dolphin, had a crush on her algebra teacher and when rebuffed, his wife found her in their closet smelling his clothes and cutting herself, then she lied to the police about them being lovers, so he was arrested and eventually killed himself in prison, wanted to destroy George Clooney (which Stan helped her with) intentionally sabotaged a friend's birth control in order to knock her up against her will (Stan helped), once intentionally hit Stan with a car, stabbed her college roommate to death (Stan knows about it) and much more.

Her and Stan are perfect together.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, what Francine has going for her (in comparison) is the superficial appearance of normality

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Which is sort of the point.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
bb let me introduce you to my friend semicolon, he might help your writing be more understandable.

[personal profile] visp 2013-02-19 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I was considering just doing a bulletpoint list of the crazy shit she's done, but figured the colon-then-commas would work better. I don't think semicolons would have helped this one; maybe breaking it into smaller sentences would have, but I liked the list effect. But hey, if you want to re-write it with semicolons and prove me wrong, go right ahead.

If you mean the whole 'using it as a super-comma thing... eh, in retrospect I probably should have, but just wasn't feeling like it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Yeah and Stan was so busy with his dog that he wouldn't listen to her when people were trying to murder her. Yes, she can be as douchy as Stan but normally not towards him like he is constantly towards her.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Way to miss the point of the series and also a lot of Francine's personality but OKAY.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
OP

From my point of view she also can be very douchy. But she doesn't display the same toughtless, I'm-taking-everything-you-do-for-granted, I will ignore you while people are trying to freaking murder you because of a dog, kind of behaviour Stan has towards here.

I get it, it's supposed to be funny. It stopped being funny for me though when Francine almost died because Stan couldn't stop paying to his own god damn problems for one freaking minute to listen to his own wife!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think its been made clear time and again that Francine is just as horrible a person as Stan and it isn't that they occasionally love each other, it is that they deserve each other.
