In what way did they make him American? (Not British or American here)

They change some of his vocabulary so as not to confuse the average drooling American CBS viewer, e.g. flat --> apartment, mobile phone --> cell phone. And he uh... currently lives in America and seems to like it. He used to live in England and seemed to like THAT too, though.

Maybe his characterization is American, too, in some inexplicable way OP would have to explain to me. Seeing as how he's played by an English actor who has a great deal of input into his character, I doubt it, though.

I could make a comment about how maybe it's because he and Robert Downey Jr aren't fuck-ugly like some apparent TRUE British Sherlocks, but I won't because I'm too mature for that.

Well... when you live in a country, you tend to use their vocabulary. It's not that hard to pick up.
