According to wikipedia, "Goth subculture" dates to the early 19080s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth_subculture). Gothic novels go back earlier, Gothic novels earlier than that, and Ostrogoths and Visigoths some time before that.

The modern Goth subculture was actually underground in the '70s before it emerged in the early '80s.
