Wouldn't Anne Rice be to 'blame'? Anyway, let people have their getaway fantasies. You have your own corner of interest, let them have theirs.

i wouldn't really call anne rice paranormal romance, definitely not in comparison to the current PR trend.

Oh geez do you mean to tell me that someone who writes stories about a private investigator who fucks a vampire and a werewolf owns a black jacket and a skull necklace

Do you think all women over forty are your mother

Do you think your mother is really lame and shouldn't attempt to look cool ever

She looks kinda creepy there, but less like her descriptions of Anita Blake and Merry Gentry than she did in older photos. Progress or just old age kicking in?

I won't let this trend die until I get selkies. I want a fucking selkie, damn it!

But you know, the great thing about books is that there are many of them in many different genres so you don't have to read the ones you don't like.

As for the paranormal romance trend...I think it's been around siince before Bram Stoker and it keeps getting back into popular media every so often.

And as for the clothes....have you met older metal fans? Because there's tons of them who dress like that and have been for years, possibly since before you were born. There's nothing "new" about it, and it's certainly not Hamilton's style of dress who originated tht. Now, I don't know much about the woman, but it's entirely possible she dressed that way even before writing her Anita Blake stuff.

So us old broads can't dress goth? Who do you think wore it when we were teens, youngster?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they push gothic and dark because theres a whole generation of eldergoths in the gothic community who have careers that are now letting them explore the ideas of book publishing and writing fiction, which is extremely difficult for younger writers to get taken seriously with? There are a lot of people who are older and have been "milking the goth trend" for most of their lives and continue to be goths even after their 30's and 40's, I know, it's shocking.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I didn't realize women over 40 had a dress code.

I admire these women. I'm in my early twenties and dress in a way that other people often consider "goth". I'm not sure what my interests will be in another twenty years. I might want to style myself in a completely different way. But it's nice to know that if the way I like to look doesn't change, I'm not going to be the only 40-year-old out there who wears too much black.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)

One, there's nothing wrong with Paranormal Romance - like any genre, the books are only as good as the writer writing them.

Two, how would you prefer the writers to dress? Soccer mom style? Got news for you, I'm a 42 year old married for 19 years mom of TWO awesome rugrats and I've been dressing "goth" since the freakin' 80s.

If I were lucky enough to do a promo pic for the back of my as yet unwritten vampire porn novel, I'd dress all in black with my long hair flowing and my crosses gleaming just to piss you off.

She's wearing a leather jacket, a black t-shirt, and a skull necklace.

This is what you're complaining about being all "dark" / "goth"?
Man, you must have a bitch of a time accepting that older bikers exist, huh?

Because this is pretty subdued compared to a lot of the looks that go on in the goth subculture.
Yes, even amongst 40-somethings.

Either way, they can do what they want.

You do get that the goth subculture first became a thing in the early 1980s, right? As in 30 years ago? Which means at least a few of these over-40 paranormal romance writers probably actually are goths, and have been since before you were born?

Not that I'd call a leather jacket and a silver necklace goth fashion, exactly, but the subculture isn't the sole province of people too young to recall the turn of the millennium.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-02-19 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
My primary problem with Paranormal Romance is that my local bookstore devoted an entire pair of shelves to it, but doesn't keep award winners/nominees like Okorafor, Lord, and Beukes in stock. Evidently paperbacks of sexy models in uncomfortable poses are a higher product-placement priority than brilliant, award-winning, fantasy fiction that crosses cultural boundaries.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you people keep labouring under the illusion that you can tell people what to write and what to wear or how to be? If you can't express your dislike for something without doing any of these things, SHUT UP.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how this entire thread has become paranormal romance recs and eldergoths lambasting OP for OP's tunnel vision.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
All the replies saying 40+ year old women should dress the way they please are valid. The only problem with those comments in relation to LKH is that she is so full of douchebaggery it is not even funny. Her novels suck, her erotica is one dimensional, and her main character is the biggest MARY SUE in the universe. She dresses that way because she dresses Anita that way.

LKH is whiny baby who thinks that the drivel she writes is actually great literature. The woman is a hack. A douchey hack. UGH.

I know. Bitter here. Former fan is bitter. :(
