asexuality and autism!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
so, labels are kind of lame, but i kind of identify with those two things in the subject box. i don't have much of an interest of pursuing a community based on those subjects, but whenever the topics in fandom come up i want to put in my two cents. but i don't because both groups seem to group a lot of hate towards them. so yeah. should i wait until the hate dies down like it has for other stuff?

did something happen recently? and do you mean hate between the two groups for each other, or hate from an outside group towards both of them?

outside groups, or what i feel like is most of tumblr.

there's somewhat recently been an increase of people who identify as asexual in different fandom spaces, so people who identify as it tend to get dismissed because they /obviously/ want to rid this new fad sexuality and be a special snowflake. autism has had a bad rap because there's been a few outspoken people who do dumb things and then blame their aspergers on their dumb actions or people who do incredibly socially awkward things (chris-chan comes to mind.) autism hate seems to be dying a bit down, though.

*aspergers for their dumb actions. whoops.

Not sure about autism (I wasn't even aware that was a thing people hated on, but I don't usually look for that topic so that could be why), but I think asexuality is always going to be one of those things that people just hate. Honestly, I think if you have something to say, just say it. I personally would opt out of discussions I know will cause huge arguments (ie: anything regarding oppression, those extra labels under the asexual umbrella that refer to people not being 100% ace, etc) though because those never end well.

just say your two cents and say fuck you to people that get on your back about it

honestly, i have a lot of feelings about asexuals, particularly those on tumblr, but there's no point 'waiting for the hate to die down' to say what you want to say about a group you belong to. just say it. the hate will probably never die down.

eh, i feel like a lot of potentially productive discussion (the main reason why i want to discuss these topics) is lost when they're somewhat controversial topics. this is especially so with tumblr's brand of asexuality, where i disagree with a lot of the stuff being said by both supporters and people who take tumblr's asexual community and apply it to the rest of the community.

Asexuality isn't hated on as much as it used to be. The new fad is demisexuality.

demisexuality has strong ties to asexuality, though. it isn't quite like pansexuality jumping to asexuality as the new fad.

Demis on tumblr are very against being lumped in with asexuals. They instead want people to see them as 'queer', which is just lol.
