I disagree with a few of your summations (e.g. Mary and Matthew never had a love-hate-love relationship...also I'm pretty sure the staff do live upstairs? but mostly we see the downstairs kitchen and servants' hall, and in any event, "downstairs" is more metaphorical than anything and is not a term that originated with DA), but really I want to point out that they aren't experiencing "a Victorian recession." It's the '20s in the show now, fer cryin' out loud! And it started in 1912, which was not part of the Victorian period, either.
