I'm probably overthinking this. BUT BIOLOGY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS OF WORLBUILDING ;-;
(While I'm on the topic, I would really like to see how they, or other sci-fi artists, would develop an alien species that has more than two sexes/genders. And what about gender? Do other species have a concept of "gender" that is distinct from sex? Do other species use separate pronouns to address individuals? Do other...yeah I need to stop I have a paper to write Dx)
Here's how I would prefer for it to be set up: you can be male or female Shepard and you can court all the available romance options as either. If you only want a straight or gay relationship, then cool, you have a lot of options. If you don't care what the sex of your partner is, then cool, you have a lot of options. (And if you don't want romance, that's also cool. But I think that's already an option?) The sexualities of the characters don't have to be set in stone - it's highly improbable that all the characters would be bi (although, with alien biology, we really don't know if that's uncommon at all! Think Homestuck trolls for example lol) but that can just vary based on the universe and the decisions of the player. After all, isn't the point of a game like ME to mold the universe around you the way you would like it to be?
I'm not sure yet if I'm a "completionist" in this sense. It will depend on gameplay and what "completing" actually ends up involving, and what the rewards are. I have so many fandoms that I'm interested in that I'll probably wind up just moving on once I complete the storyline. I tend to be like this in Zelda and Pokémon too, for example. I never had the patience to complete a Pokédex; I'd rather start over and train a new team. And I don't do most Zelda sidequests because they're just not as interesting or rewarding to me as the main quest. (so tl;dr probably not, but I'm not sure yet.)

But I can understand your obsession. I like biological differences too. I also have a huge thing for cultural differences. They make me excited.
(I think they would do what we, humans, do. We find weird native animals and say, "That! I want my alien species to have that!" I'm assuming there are animals on their planet that have two or more sexes so it's possible.)
Essentially you want a scenario like Dragon Age 2? Where almost all the romance options were romanceable by both genders?
Ah, okay. You don't have to worry then. Because there are little things that carry over as well as the large plot decisions. So I was going to say that if you're a completionist it may be in your best interest to find a list of the things that carry over. But if you're just in it for the main plot lie the little things shouldn't matter too much.

Maybe there are animals on the Asari planet that have two sexes, idk. Sexual reproduction is certainly advantageous from an evolutionary point of view. I would have to wonder if they shared a common ancestor with one sex or two. Sexual reproduction evolved very early in Earth's life forms and most organisms exhibit it to one degree or another.
I also am thinking of the creatures (there are just a few) that reproduce only through parthenogenesis. Some scientists call parthenogenesis a form of sexual reproduction since it technically involves gametes. The organisms that only reproduce this way (some lizards for example) are all-female. The justification for calling them females when their species has no males comes from the fact that their ancestors obviously had males and females, and they basically fill the role of a female by laying eggs/giving birth...they just don't need the male half anymore. Also, some animals can exhibit parthenogenesis even if they don't rely on it (such as some sharks) so females that are definitely female (because males exist) can still sometimes reproduce without them. So I wonder if Asari are like that? or if they never had ancestors with another sex, or not recently enough for it to matter.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I don't even know if that kind of information exists. Though, I mean, you could world build yourself when you get done with the series.
Oh, I know those lizards! We covered them in my high school biology class. Um, I don't know if that's ever gotten into with asari though. I mean, we do learn about the asari's biological past but I don't know much about it because I haven't gotten to it yet. So you will get some answers but I'm not sure if they will really answer anything or just cause more questions.
