Re: Saltwater Fish Tanks

My dad had massive saltwater tanks when I was very small but he had to get rid of them (also when I was very small). I think at one point he had a load of crabs until one of them ate all the others! What I mainly remember is going to the seaside and rockpooling with him and finding loads of blennies, anemones and starfish (while he found much more interesting things, I'm sure). He had these great big sort of satchels to transport creatures home at the end of the holiday. Sigh...childhood memories.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll get more of a response today, but I could ask my dad for some tips for you in the morning if you don't. What size tank is it?

If you're checking back at all, here's what my dad had to say:

I never kept tropical salt water fish so can't recommend suitable fish, it's best to go to a specialist aquarium shop, NOT a pet shop or garden centre, if you want the best advice and the best quality fish. If you've never had fish before, I wouldn't think salt water fish would be a good start, as they are quite difficult. They are very particular about water conditions and will not survive outside a very narrow pH range. You also have to check nitrites, nitrates and several other substances to keep them healthy. They are also very expensive to buy and replace. You might be better getting advice on converting it to fresh water tropicals!

Soooo, probably not too helpful but I didn't want to leave you hanging! I hope you enjoy whatever fish you decide to get :)
