If you're checking back at all, here's what my dad had to say:

I never kept tropical salt water fish so can't recommend suitable fish, it's best to go to a specialist aquarium shop, NOT a pet shop or garden centre, if you want the best advice and the best quality fish. If you've never had fish before, I wouldn't think salt water fish would be a good start, as they are quite difficult. They are very particular about water conditions and will not survive outside a very narrow pH range. You also have to check nitrites, nitrates and several other substances to keep them healthy. They are also very expensive to buy and replace. You might be better getting advice on converting it to fresh water tropicals!
