Studio Gibli "young girl" characters tend to drive me insane, case in point: Spirited Away. Ugh.

Ugh, yes. I don't know if it's because I've only seen the dubs, but the way the little girl characters speak (IN ALL CAPS! CONSTANTLY YELLING EVERYTHING!) is like nails on a chalkboard. It detracts from the beauty of the animation for me.
charming_stranger: Himemiya Anthy from Adolescence of Utena. (Anthy)

I'd bet most of the target audience loves her, though.

Exactly!

Most of what comes out of my best friend's 3-year-old's mouth is yelling. Sadly that's how most kids seem to work.

This. They're not ridiculously unrealistic. Are you sure you don't just find small children grating, OP?

(And there is nothing wrong with that, because damn, they can be.)

At least the one in Spirited Away learns to not be a spoilt brat along the story.

The one that really annoyed me even though she was supposed to be awww-adorable was the fish-girl in in Ponyo. Which kind of ruined the movie...
