Fuckin signed. It seemed like she was supposed to be endearing but she just creeped me out.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Jeez, I don't really remember much about her. How was she creepy?

[personal profile] world_eater 2013-02-19 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's been a while. As far as I remember she had that hyper annoying kid thing going on, but then at times she'd silently just do these super wide grins? I'd have to watch it again to be sure she did that.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Don't half of Miyazaki's characters do that thing? He's not exactly inventive with how he chooses to express characters.

Uh, I don't know, doesn't really matter in the context though now does it?

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-19 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really defending the character, just saying that it's a style he does that isn't meant to be creepy.

Yah, that's what I meant by saying I think she was supposed to be endearing, but it really didn't work for me.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I took your "but then at times she'd silently just do these super wide grins" to mean you didn't understand why that was included at all.

All I have to add to this secret is my Totoro icon <3

See, I watched the dubbed version, and in the original dub she didn't bother me that much, but in the new(ish) Disney dub with the Fanning sisters? I want to fucking murder her.
ginainthekingsroad: DS9 floats with rainbows (DS9- Deep Space Nyan)

YES. The original English dub was the first way I saw the film (on vhs to boot), and it was so endearing. Then a while ago I picked up a dvd for the option of English and the original Japanese... but it was the second English dub. I think some of my recoiling in horror was "It doesn't sound like it did when I was a kid!", but the main reason was that it was simply not NEARLY as good a dub performance. I can't remember if the script was changed any or not.

I mean, let's be honest: a lot of kids that age suck. I only found her at all endearing when she was just playing on her own and not interacting with anyone, but the rest of the time she at least seemed realistic.

Studio Gibli "young girl" characters tend to drive me insane, case in point: Spirited Away. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes. I don't know if it's because I've only seen the dubs, but the way the little girl characters speak (IN ALL CAPS! CONSTANTLY YELLING EVERYTHING!) is like nails on a chalkboard. It detracts from the beauty of the animation for me.
charming_stranger: Himemiya Anthy from Adolescence of Utena. (Anthy)

I'd bet most of the target audience loves her, though.

Exactly!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Most of what comes out of my best friend's 3-year-old's mouth is yelling. Sadly that's how most kids seem to work.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
This. They're not ridiculously unrealistic. Are you sure you don't just find small children grating, OP?

(And there is nothing wrong with that, because damn, they can be.)

At least the one in Spirited Away learns to not be a spoilt brat along the story.

The one that really annoyed me even though she was supposed to be awww-adorable was the fish-girl in in Ponyo. Which kind of ruined the movie...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, this makes me sad :( She always reminded me of myself at that age.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Little girl acts too mature for her age. Fandom:
"But that's not how little girls act! Bad writing!!!"

Little girl acts like a little girl. Fandom:
"OMG, she's so annoying! SHUT UP!!!"

You just can't win with little girls, it seems.

Also, did you watch a dub? Because I watched the Japanese version, and both my brother and I thought Mei was the cutest, most adorable little thing. Then we switched over to whatever English dub was on the DVD just to check it out, and we were like "... nope." and switched back to Japanese.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to all of this. I've only watched the original and she seemed sweet. But regardless, that seems like a whole lot of hatred directed to a small child for being loud (as small children often are).
