Just like my mother unironically loves "Never Gonna Give You Up."

I like that song unironically too. :)

Never Gonna Give You Up is unironically a really well-made, well-constructed, listenable, good pop song, albeit one that hasn't aged well. The thing is that the people making didn't give a shit about anything except how well it would appeal to people, and so they went all-out with things that appealed to people at a given historical moment, with the result that it seems goofy and outdated now. But it's still a well-crafted song and it's one that people can take a lesson from - in fact, the KLF used it as an example in part of their guide book for making number one hits.

This is very true. The song has grown on me, but it is so adorably late-'80s, which is now part of its appeal.

The rest of your comment is very awesome. If only I had something to add to it.

I do a little jig every time I get rickrolled. I getchu~!

Ha ha, my own mother spent the better part of yesterday trying to find a music artist she loved as a teen--apparently it was Rick Astley. She rickrolled the entire house.

Your mom is awesome.

That's awesome. At least your mother knew who he was. I'm the anon from above, and I had to show my mother the video to explain why I thought it was funny that she put it on her iPod. When she saw him, she said, "...I thought he was black!" For over 20 years. What.

Me too. It got so that all my friends got pissed off because I liked being rickrolled.

I love that song unironically, too. Rickrolling didn't come around for maaaaaaaaannnnny years and its sudden appearance in pop culture didn't negate everyone's appreciation for the song.

Me too, it's a good song. It doesn't really earworm for me, either.

I didn't care much about it before, but the more I got rickrolled, the more I grew fond of it. By the time the meme had died, I ~*~uninronically~*~ liked the song.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
You do know the song came before the meme, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do, but since I was born two years after it first came out and somehow never heard it on the radio (I guess Midwestern stations just don't like it?), I only first heard of it in the context of rickrolling. I've come to like it unironically, too; it was just hilarious when my mother started playing it on her iPod through our charger/speakers, especially since she didn't know its new context.

Hey, me too.
