I'm female and I found the scene boring and distracting. I want action in my action movie, please...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
You think Star Trek movies are action movies? HAAHAHAHAAAAA. OH god. I needed that laugh. ALL Star Trek movies have had 'we are going to now try and make you cry and feel things' moments. You want straight up action movies don't watch sci-fi.

Maybe, but Wrath of Khan did it right. This was cheap. Cheap cheap cheap. We have no reason to give even the first shit about those two people other than "Oh, these are Kirk's parents, oh look the inherent tragedy in the juxtaposition of life and death". ...which was also done in Wrath of Khan, but, again, it was done better.

So you have no empathy. Good for you. Now sit down and shut up and stop shitting over stuff that affected others.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
As if the original "HAAHAHAHAAAAA. OH god. I needed that laugh" reponse to anon isn't shitting on someone else's opinion.

the ability to step back and out of the immersion and see a movie for how it was constructed does not negate the ability for empathy, what is even this comment

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think someone not caring about fictional characters is a bit different from someone not having empathy.

Wow, over-reaction much?

I always thought the point of the scene was more "These are Jim Kirk's parents! Oh look George dies just as Jim is born (early too!)! The Romulan ship has already changed Jim's life by taking his dad away (and probably causing an early birth*)!"

*James T Kirk was originally born on Earth. In Iowa. I handwave it that the attack must have caused his mother to go into labour early.

Because obviously, there wasn't enough action going on in the background and intercut with that scene.

And obviously, an action movie means every single scene is loaded with action, so that you're so desensitized by the halfway mark, the climax and payoff does nothing but irritate you.

This. And it struck me as incredibly unnecessarily dramatic. I mean, what the hell. Seriously.

Star Trek is seriously not an action franchise. I mean, it has a good bit of action, but...they are SO not action movies.

Also, IDGI. That movie DID have action in it. Are you seriously suggesting that every single scene should be action-y?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
This life-long Trekker understands what you are saying. It's all right if you watched the Star Trek movie for the action. I mean, that's exactly what the advertisements and publicity promised, right?

Star Trek may not be only action, but it wouldn't be Star Trek without the action.

A pint over here, mate!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
That scene was sandwiched between the ship falling apart/people dying and the ship exploding on impact with another ship.

How much more action do you need?!?!
