I don't think that many people in fandom are really depressed, unstable etc. Some of them are, of course, but I think a lot of people just like to feel sorry for themselves, don't get the attention they want IRL, but if they complain about their self-diagnosed depression, anxiety etc. online everybody supports them. So I'm sure there are actually way more people in fandom who have happy lives just like you, but who simply think that not having a perfect life means you should complain 24/7 to your online friends.

Wow, you sound like a great friend.

Oh, for goodness' sake. A general opinion about online fandom has almost nothing to do with how one treats people one actually knows or interact with.

What, to be a good friend you have to assume everyone who isn't 100% full of spring is really miserable and ill? No, thanks, I'll pass on being pathologised. Sometimes I just want a whinge.

I think it's a combination of a few things. One, mental health problems are fairly common. Two, people who have a hard time irl are more likely to hang out on the internet talking about fantasy worlds. Three, people are more willing to talk about their problems in an anonymous or semi-anonymous space.

Absolutely agreed.

I think that a lot of people in fandom are just really young. Everyone wants attention, but especially teenagers, and it's really easy to make things more severe than they actually are. Hell, as a kid, I desperately wanted to be edgy and ~different~. Of course, around the time you assume it's just someone being melodramatic, it's not.

I think we also see/remember posts and comments from people who really are depressed or something like that. I don't actually think it's a huge proportion of the people here.
