That's problem when you have characters that are both popular and paper thin. People will fill in the blanks with their own wish fulfilling back story.

I call it The Boba Fett Effect. Named after the bounty hunter in Return of the Jedi who had a screen time of five minutes back when the movie first came out but became a fan favorite for whatever reason. People went crazy creating back stories about who and what he was and what he did. The same thing happened with the characters in Twilight because they too are so paper thin. And we've seen this again in BBC's Sherlock because we've had only six episodes with no real back stories or character growth for any of the characters. People just fill in the rest.

Is it annoying? Can be. But it's harmless.

I don't know about the fanfic, but there's some good EU material on Boba Fett.
