Everyone's either making jokes or defending the existence of chill fandom guys (who do indeed exist), so I'm going to take the opportunity to say this.

Speaking as someone who's spent most of her life in male-dominated fandom spaces, it's a very different flavor. You should be aware that tumblr and livejournal skews enormously female, yes, but that's very much an anomaly, and that straight cis men lurk and participate everywhere, just like I lurked and participated in places where women were supposedly unheard of. That's something that might make you scared for any of your own reasons, but it's important you know that and keep it in mind.

Accordingly, it, more than anything else, should reinforce the very real fact that everything you put out there on the internet can be read and seen by anyone who might be lurking. I really hate to make you more paranoid, but the fact of the internet is that you SHOULD be paranoid. Never link anything to your RL persona. Make pseudonyms of pseudonyms and keep identifying information under complete wraps.

I'm not saying women can't be crazy stalkers too -- I've heard plenty of stories. I'm saying that I, myself, have far more male fandom friends crossing lines and boundaries and in more dangerous ways, and getting DANGEROUSLY fixated, than any of my female friends have. We're not talking mere emotional unhealthiness, we're talking real-world implications.

I mean, because of my own life experience and luck, men aren't scary to me, but this has gotten you to think about the fact that everyone and anyone is reading what you put out there, and that's a good thing. More people need to keep that in mind, especially nowadays, when the line between RL and online life seems to be popularly eroded. That's not a problem per se, but I think it's led to complacency. Everyone needs to remember that there are far more people reading and observing them than they ever think.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer D:
