I think it helps that Dr.Who's fandom fail is self-contained. I'm not in either fandom and was happily ignoring both when Lucy Liu (of whom I'm a fan) was cast in Elementary (which I ended up liking a lot). Now I pretty much loathe the jerkass Sherlock fans because I can't go on tumblr to look in the tags for my show without seeing loads of offensive crap, and maybe be harassed because "omg! you don't watch Sherlock but are a fan of the rip-off with the chick? you must be homophobic!".
Also I don't know about anyone from the Who cast being sexist, classits pricks like Butternut Cucumbersquash and of fanbrats going out of their way to defend them...

SA to be fair, I'm also pretty over people who NEED to inform you that "I don't watch either, because the only Holmes is Jeremy Brett". What am I supposed to say? Good for you, mate, you're obviously classier than us peasants?

The current Who head writer has, uh, problems writing women, but since Who fandom fail is largely self-contained and self-directed, the fandom mostly skips defending him and moves straight on to attacking him out of proportion to the original offense.

AFAIK all the principal cast members of New Who (and most of the ones from Classic) have been lovely human beings though. The statistical improbability of it is kind of eerie now that I think about it. But then again, there seems to be a culture in the Doctor Who cast of "this is a huge family show and you're a role model, so for Christ's sake don't show your ass in public."
