Doctor Who has 33 seasons ranging from 13 to 28 episodes long, and a TV movie.

Sherlock has six episodes.

It's not the amount of suck, it's the concentration.

Eh. The Doctor Who fandom has its share of awfulness, but it feels like the awfulness is a lot more spread out?

Like the show is so diverse and expansive that you get the Classic Who fans and New Who fans and then the subsets of RTD Era fans and Moffat Era fans. And people tend to generally stick to their own area.

So it's harder to make general statements about Doctor Who fandom since it's so big and varied.

I was under the impression that Doctor Who fandom was very keen to fight and be nasty to its long-time hereditary enemy Doctor Who fandom.

Whereas Sherlock fandom has been known to be nasty to other fandoms (*cough* Elementary *cough*) and I feel it's more... invasive, what with the Cumberbitches and Cumberbatch being in a lot of things. Not that people are necessarily nasty in that case but sometimes it feels like they can be everywhere.

My theory is, Doctor Who fans don't go around raving about how crazy they are and how put upon they are by the fact they have to wait X amount of time for new episodes.

Doctor Who fandom gets quite a bit of hate as well, trust me. I think the reason that Sherlock fandom hate is more visible is because: a) its actors have appeared in other shows/movies that have vocal fans and b) it has a "rival" in the form of Elementary fandom.

In other words, there's a crossover aspect that you simply don't get (atm...) with Doctor Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Both those fandoms make me glad that the Tom Hiddleston fandom, is mostly sane now.

...mostly....

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with Sherlock fans is that they get into everything, like those little clingy hair clippings after you get a haircut, and spam shows and movies that feature Martin Freeman or Benedict Cumberbatch, and bash other shows for not being as good as Sherlock. And not just Elementary. They will just nod when you mention a totally unrelated show to them and sadly say that unfortunately, it just doesn't compare to Sherlock and looks like crap when compared to it.

Doctor Who fans are nutzoid and nasty and negative and whiny and wanky, but they stay in their own circles unless they're bugging uninterested people to watch the show. Which Sherlock fans do as well just as, if not more, often than Doctor Who fans.

The again...to my knowledge, I don't think Sherlock has a sexual frustration blog tumblr. Not one that's as skeevy as Doctor Who's at least O.o

[personal profile] vongroovy 2013-02-20 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
There, there, they both have their good and bad points. Finger-pointing isn't the answer.

I feel like a lot of the Sherlock fandom didn't even watch the same show I did, and I don't usually get that from the Doctor Who side. Not to mention that the Sherlock fandom is everywhere. Doctor Who fandom, in my experience, is more self-contained, while the Sherlock fandom is just throwing itself all over every other tangentially related fandom like they're in some kind of competition. Like, calm down, Sherlock and Elementary can peacefully coexist. There's just been a lot of visible nastiness from the Sherlock fandom directed at other fandoms. Which isn't to say there isn't nastiness in the Doctor Who fandom, but it seems to me to be a lot less visible from outside the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Doctor Who is a very strange show. There's a different setting nearly every episode, more often than not a different genre every episode, has super confusing time travel continuity, loads and loads of characters, lots of weird monsters, and a main character who can turn into a different actor every few years. Plus, a whole lot more than that. There is canon precedent for a lot of very odd things, and a canon that explicitly makes up the mythology as it goes along, and changes it from time to time when it sees fit. It makes sense that there's going to be some weird stuff coming out of the fans of that show, because it's that kind of show. Science Fiction draws perhaps more than its fair share of silly, but I think for good reason. It's a fascinating medium from which a lot of creativity can be drawn.

Sherlock really isn't an odd show at all. It's a pretty standard 'they fight crime' show, with the twist being that the episodes are actually based on ACD stories rather than simply stealing the trope. Sure, there are some silly moments- the main character went to Buckingham Palace dressed in a bedsheet once, after all. However, unlike most things with fandoms, there are absolutely zero sci-fi or fantasy elements whatsoever. Sure, there are mysteries that haven't been solved yet, but everything shows that there's going to be a perfectly mundane explanation to it. There's nothing integral to the show that gives fandom opportunities for weirdness.

So, when Doctor Who fandom is being weird and cracky... well, yeah, what else do you expect from the fans of a fifty year old time travel show.

When Sherlock fandom is being weird and cracky... uh, yeah, that's weird. IDK why they're doing that. Except for the fact that it seems like half of them migrated over from 11 era Doctor Who fandom because of Steven Moffat.

Sherlock fandom is mostly slashers who are women. When you have that combination in a fandom, it becomes an easier target and easier to say it's more objectively bad than other fandoms that might have the same problems.

Not even gonna lie, the Downtown Abbey tag thing had me in stitches. It's definitely one of the nuttier fandoms. Albeit not in the fun, Harry Potter-type in-fandom wackiness, but more in the whole 'attacks other shows even remotely related with extreme vitriol' way. Which is...yeah.

I would be glad about the fact that they don't target only Elementary if they didn't have this very disturbing pattern going on.

DW doesn't bleed out and infect other fandoms to the same extent as the Sherlock fandom. Any other series or film that contains either Freeman or Cumberbatch is doomed to be plagued by Sherlock fangirls. There's also far less underage slash fangirls in the DW fandom and that really makes quite a difference.

I think New Who and Classic Who fans waste some of the energy they spending on crazy fighting each other.

Doctor Who fandom is fucking weird and Balkanized and can be wanky as hell when you put the various subgroups in the same room, but (nowadays at least) it hasn't earned the same reputation for having no fucking sense of boundaries with either the actors/writers or with other fandoms.

Also, the weirdness of Who fandom is in a perpetual state of wheezing and bursting blood vessels and trailing fifty yards behind as it struggles to keep up with the weirdness of the show itself. ("It's the Master/the Rani/Omega/Metacrisis Ten who has regenerated into the Valeyard and clawed his way back from the parallel universe!" "...no, you unimaginative tit, it's all an illusion created by a memory-sucking crustaceoid mind parasite from Calufrax Minor.") Sherlock fandom OTOH seems to be made of ultra-concentrated acid-laced crack, and can only intermittently make the distinction between "canon" and "shit I read into the episode while going through it frame-by-frame studying each flick of Benedict Cumberbatch's eyelids."

I don't mean to excuse Who fandom for it's awfulness, but the show itself is so fucking insane it's very very very hard for even well-balanced people to not to look totally batshit now and then, so you can imagine how jerks react. Like, the plots are powered by a blizzard of cocaine and the episode concepts are based on drunktexts, which means you can come off as just a douchebag, rather than a totally insane douchebag, while engaging in a screaming seventy-comment bitchfight over whether or not the minute nuances of a character's behavior while he was being mindraped by homicidal telepathic sunlight was actually the writers' sooper sekrit hidden foreshadowed masterplan to prove that a character was in fact a worthless chav who is an abomination of soulless evil compared to her replacement. Because that's actually a theory that is just as reasonable as sixty other utterly plot twists that have appeared on the show over the years.

Sherlock has no such excuse. They're insane for no reason.
