You show 'em!
I honestly don't hate an author for not liking fanfiction, but they can't stop people from writing about their characters doing whatever, it's annoying that they try.

The secret is about the author going on a anti-fanfic rant. If they don't like something, should they just keep their mouths shut?

But the OP isn't saying "if she doesn't like fanfic, she should keep her mouth shut." Diana Gabaldon is free to go off on any kind of a rant she likes. And fanficcers are free to point and laugh.

Although it wouldn't be a bad idea for authors who don't like fanfic to at least think twice before ranting about it, since I've yet to see an anti-fanfic rant by any author that didn't make the ranter look completely ridiculous.

Yeah, pretty much this. Going on an anti-fanfic rant (as opposed to merely stating your preferences without being ridiculous or insulting people) never seems to work out really well. Authors forget that the people writing/reading fanfiction are likely to be, well, FANS. You could alienate them, but why do that if you don't have to?

And they always seem to come up with the stupidest arguments, the worst possible analogies. Writing fanfic is like breaking into my house, they scream. It's like seducing my husband or stealing and prostituting my kids!
