post some excerpts, please

Yes, promote her novel.

That'll show her! She'll really feel bad after you publicize her novel, both by making a secret about it and by writing a ton of stories about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think these books are well-known enough that one secret and some fanfic will not affect their popularity.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, you do realize this is a very well known bestselling series and has been for years, right? Even several dozen porn-filled fanfics floating in the nebula that is the internet would be a drop in the bucket in terms of publicity.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Quite honestly, I've had Outlander sitting around for 2 years now and have only ever read 2 pages. I kept meaning to read it.

Now I won't nor will I check out anything else by her or even gift the book. It's gonna sit around collecting dust. I didn't even know she was popular or about that ridiculous rant that I just read. When authors pull that crap, it's automatically a cue for me to tap out. And cheerlead for people who do write spite fanfic.

Eh, I understand the feeling. The author probably feels disheartened when she reads a lot of fic that totally don't seem to 'get' her material. She could be wrong about that, but basically every fandom had tastes that probably didn't gel with what the author had in mind.

She's allowed her opinions about fanfic of her work.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is (to me, at least, and I'm not the OP), she was horrified that people were writing porn about her characters, when her books -- at least the first one, which is as far as I got -- had ridiculous amounts of sex scenes. Like every five pages or something. And they were ridiculous and some were borderline offensive (like the spanking scene where the female character was not willing and it was all about her husband putting in her place, and we're supposed to swoon over the fact that he's so aroused by beating her that he simply must have sex with her afterwards.)

So she can do it, but if a fan writes fanfic where the characters have sex, that's sullying them. Whatevs, lady.

True. So long as she doesn't try and do an Anne Rice and try and legally get all fanfic of her characters removed off the Internet (as if that could ever happen).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Here, read her opinions about fanfic for yourself and see if her feeling is still so understandable:

Yes, and I'm sure she can wipe away her tears of fury about you with a bunch of the cash she has.

Not quite on topic, but

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
can someone tell me what these books are about? I hear a lot about them, but could never make sense of what type of books they are. I know they have something to do with time travel, and Scotland, and some sort of romance, but other than that, I'm not sure, so I don't know if I'd like them or not.

Is it more historical fiction, or more romance? Would someone who hates the typical harlequin-romance tropes end up being put off?

You show 'em!
I honestly don't hate an author for not liking fanfiction, but they can't stop people from writing about their characters doing whatever, it's annoying that they try.

Please continue. Being annoying to obnoxious people is fun.

On a side note, I quite liked that series. And, of course, it was originally an AU Doctor Who story. Not written for fandom, but still.

i support this. especially if it results in awesome porn.

i hate authors who say they don't like fanfic or who actually tell their fans not to write it. in fact, in general i want all artists i like to keep their unhappy opinions to themselves.

For the people who haven't heard of this woman: please find her rant on fanfiction. It is the most impressive example of hypocritical, OTT and overprotective batshitery you will ever read. It's hilarious.

Lol, I wrote a fic in a holiday exchange for someone who requested Outlander fic, and got a bitchy comment from a DG supporter saying 'btw, she doesn't like fanfic, didn't you know?'... because I'm going to take down a giftfic after a comment like that, right?

Wait till' you get the opportunity to write fanfic based on the TV series version of "Outlander" that is being developed.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually a brilliant idea. I wish I still had any interest in Anne Rice characters. A few years ago I would have done this for hours a day. Oh well. I'm sure I'll come across another author who does this.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've thought about this, like Anne McCaffery's and Robin McKinley's books have some awesome fanfic potential that I wish would be addressed.

(I'm not pressed abt McKinley's no-fanfic stance though because she's never been nasty about it, I think she was just like 'well my lawyer says it's bad because if I later write a book that resembles a fanfic I could get sued by that author for plagarism or smthing')
