Not quite on topic, but

can someone tell me what these books are about? I hear a lot about them, but could never make sense of what type of books they are. I know they have something to do with time travel, and Scotland, and some sort of romance, but other than that, I'm not sure, so I don't know if I'd like them or not.

Is it more historical fiction, or more romance? Would someone who hates the typical harlequin-romance tropes end up being put off?

From what I hear, there is an awful lot of graphic sex in them and it's not exactly well-written, so if that bothers you or isn't something you want to read you should probably skip em.

Essentially, this nurse from WW2 gets sent back to Scotland just before ww2. She meets up with these guys, there's some action, then some reluctant romance, then some less reluctant smut, then some less reluctant romance, and a bunch more action to go with the romance. Plus, the main guy gets injured and the girl has to take care of him... quite a lot.

IDK the harlequin tropes too well, so I'm not sure if it's like them, though. There's certainly no harm in getting it out from the library if you're curious, though.

Yeah, um. Actually, she gets sent back to Scotland in the 1740's, prior to the second rising against the English. Which, you know, kind of majorly not WW2. (Couldn't tell if that was a typo or not, sorry.) It's very much NOT a Harlequin, which will be quite obvious if you see the books in person -- they're huge. Like 900-odd pages huge. (Harlequins, like the actual ones, are short and brainless) There are a lot of people who don't like the sexual and gender dynamics in the story, but they're very well-researched (verging on "I've done my research, and now you will PAY!") and don't just end when they characters first get married/have sex/have a baby but run through their entire relationship -- I think they're both in their 60's in the most recent one. She gets really into a lot of historical and household economy stuff that I'm geeky about, so I like them; although there is an extreme fall-off in quality in the last couple books. Chica needs an editor BADLY.

I read the first one but didn't care for it because the main character did not seem like a WW2 British nurse at all and if I wanted to read rapey hurt/comfort, I would read fanfic.

You know, when I read the books the first time, I totally missed where the fuck this lady came from. As in, I totally skipped over "WWII era nurse" somehow and somehow managed to get her stuck in modern times and then go back (I was actually surprised to learn that she was a WWII nurse). There just...wasn't anything in it that screamed that characterization along those lines other than the Godmoded idea of superior medical care. I mean, I know that those ladies were battle axes in the extreme, but...she just...she could have come from anywhere. She was just so generic. Whatever her name was.

I was totally in it for the hot Scots in skirts. NGL.

Same poster as before...

Oops. Okay I kind of fucked up; I only ever read the first one. I tried to read on, and...yeah, no. Couldn't do it.

It's the idficciest of idfic. I liked some books in the series, while others made me want to throw them across the room.

I did like her spin-off Lord John series, about a (canonically gay) minor character. These are historical mystery/adventure with no time-travel component.

I never read romance but the time-travel caught my attention and I bought it. After the second world war, an English nurse is sent back in time to the 18th century. There, she meets some Scottish dudes who are fighting for the independence of Scotland. I really enjoyed the first and the second books, except for some details, but after that, it goes downhill.

Well, it gets heavier on history as the series progresses, but romance is also a very strong element throughout. Sheer length and detail alone probably puts it closer to historical fiction, I guess.

It's funny reading the other people's summaries - I didn't notice her being a WWII nurse either. I always was under the impression that it was your generic time traveling author insert who gets it on with a hot Scotsman Stu and gets into all kinds of sticky situations - all under the guise of ~historic novel~.

Oh don't let her being a WW2 nurse fool you.... that's just a thin disguise
