I do actually remember a fan in the Hetalia fandom who was very openly anti-gay and talked about how she was worried that some of her friends were going to 'go to hell'.

And in addition the her het ships, she shipped at least one pairing that was m/m genderbent into m/f. So yes, that was homophobic and heteronormative.

But I think this is really rare. Most people who genderbend a couple into a heterosexual one also ship it hardcore as a slash/femslash ship. They're just playing around. And this coming from someone who doesn't really like genderbend of any kind (not offended by it, just not interested).

Eh, it's pretty common in most bigger anime fandoms I think. They tend to catch fandom homophobes for some reason.

It was the first time I'd ever seen it. I've seen blatant homophobia in fandom before of course, but "haha now it's het so it's not gross!" was a new one for me. I believe you though, don't get me wrong.

That's strange. Yeah, I've never encountered that. In fact, nearly all the M/F genderswap I've encountered was written by slash writers. I can't recall one that wasn't.

New anon here. I used to see it fairly often in anime fandoms that I was in years ago, often ones where the fanbase skewed young. Most of them seemed very young, and I figured they had been raised in conservative environments, and that being on the internet, most of them would hopefully grow out of it.

Yeah unfortunately, video game fandoms is kind of overrun with homophobes who genderswap for this reason, as well as what the others are saying, anime fandoms.
