Henna henna henna!

[personal profile] ginainthekingsroad 2013-02-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna henna my hair again tomorrow! I did it in 2010 and it was fun. I have less hair now, so I can get it thicker than last time. You have to do dye release overnight in a warm place- I'm trying to decide if it's warmer on top of the fridge, or in the bathroom closest to the heater? Last time wasn't a problem because it was summer.

Hope I have enough old towels for the bathroom.

Have any of you used henna/indigo/cassia for hair before? I really love it.

If you have any questions about it, I can try to answer them. I get my henna from Mehandi/HennaForHair and they have great resources and forums as well.

Aw thanks. I'm probably not gonna try it for a while because I'm pretty busy. Maybe in the summer. ?_? I'll keep this in mind.

Ooh! My mother still wears henna on her hair until today! We have a henna tree in our backyard and sometimes we would pick the leaves and make a henna paste for ourselves! I sometimes joke that my mother is the only one in the family that had both red and white hair.

As for your question, try the bathroom heater. Much more humid.

Woah, a henna tree! That's awesome. We have some fruit trees, including a lemon tree so I never need to buy those for my henna paste.

Wait, a lemon tree? What do you usually use for henna paste?

I just use henna powder and lemon juice? A slightly acidic liquid breaks down the cellulose in the henna plant powder. And then the resulting acidic paste (both citric acid and lawsone) permeates better to the keratin of your hair, making it last longer.

I haven't had an opportunity to use it on my hair yet, but I always make sure I have henna on my nails since it's an encouraged practice. I just love putting it on and waiting it to dry then washing off the paste. It's usually an opportunity for me to stop doing anything except watch TV and relax.

Ooh, I've never done that. Maybe I will if I have some extra paste tomorrow. You apply it with a brush or something, right?

A brush? Haha no, just put a coat over the tip of your fingers as far as your nails, leave for an hour or so and wash off. You don't even need to hear or anything, just don't touch anything!

I see! I think I'd rather have it just on the nail, but the pictures of the whole tip colored look cool too. Just read someone who recommends a popsicle stick for doing it, so if I do nails I'll try that.

I haven't ever used it before... but I'm intrigued. How does it work? What shade does it normally turn for you? How long does it last?

You make a paste with powdered henna and acidic liquid (use pure body-art quality henna, not packaged henna hair dyes and NEVER "black henna"), and let it sit over night in a nice warm place so the dye releases. Then section your hair and coat it really nice and thick. Use gloves and vaseline your hairline and ears. Wrap it up in plastic wrap and put a towel over that to keep it warm. Chill out for 2-6 hours. Wash it out- you may need to rinse several times. It will be brightest at first, and will oxidize over the next few days.

Check out Henna for Hair- it has a lot of great detailed information, especially the various mixes showing all the different results users get.

I have dark brown hair to start with, so I'm never going to get a bright red without bleaching first, just an auburn tint. Looks best in bright sunlight. Here's an after picture from 2010:

ETA, forgot to say how long it lasts. The color stayed around 3 months, gradually fading, gone by around 6-7 months. If you have light hair, you may want to touch up your roots more often; with my dark hair, I didn't notice growth at the roots much.

I've heard you should avoid bleaching your hair for almost a year after using henna (after it's visible), because it stains down to the core of the hair. Attempting to bleach that away can cause uneven dye removal.

I've done it a LOT but no matter how I do it, it doesn't work on my hair. It used to at least make it really soft but last time I did it, that didn't even happen. No hair color change. Of course, I have really thick curly hair and it's almost black so... that's probably why
