I'm not sure if it's fair to call people hypocrites if they have a problem with one show, but don't express anger with a couple movies that, as far as I can tell, are completely unrelated.

Not that there aren't posers and hypocrites out there. But this just seems like an odd way to come to that conclusion. I mean, people are more likely to talk about stuff like this when it's about shows and movies that they've seen or that are relevant to their social circles. The focus on white tourists in The Impossible makes me a little uncomfortable, but I haven't seen the movie and I don't know anyone who has.

Maybe they just didn't hear about those movies or know much, if anything, about them? I mean, maybe they're things that most people have heard about, I don't know, but not being in touch with a lot of popular media isn't wrong, and you can't expect people to see everything so they can know about every possible controversy. "Ignoring" something isn't bad if you didn't know about it to begin with.

Yeah, definitely. I mean, I know very little about them except for little tidbits. And even if someone knows about the existence of the films, if they haven't seen them or don't know much about them, then it makes sense that they're not going to be talking about them much. Which is why I think the OP's claim is strange. I don't know of any reason to assume that there's significant overlap between the audience of "Girls" and the audience of "The Impossible" or "Argo."

I think venue matters, too. If we're talking specifically about fandom spaces, a lot of people are probably only going to talk about stuff they're involved in fannishly, or that they come across in fandom. Those movies don't seem to be the type that attract fandoms.
