There was a bit of controversy with Argo to the point where the real Mendez was asked about it and he said he doesn't identify as Hispanic.

As to the other one, I don't think anyone cares about that movie. Its just pandering to the Oscar voters.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
He can think whatever he wants about himself, but you can't just stop being something factual because you "don't identify" as it. Dude's Hispanic.

I'm kind of surprised there's been little word about Argo, but I did see (one) Racebending post about the second movie.

Oh, my God, how dare Affleck play an Irish, Italian, French, Mexican guy who doesn't even consider himself Hispanic because he has almost no ties to that side of the family and only knows Spanish because he had to learn it for the job at the CIA! That's racist. They should have had Antonio Banderas play the part all in Spanish with subtitles

/Hispanic, myself

I don't know about Argo, but I've seen a lot of criticism of The Impossible.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen some criticism of Argo pop up recently because of the Oscars, but yeah, there was quite a bit about The Impossible around the time it came out.

I didn't see the latter because it sounded horribly racist (not just racelifting the main characters, but also why is a movie about a tsunami that killed 230,000 people, the overwhelming majority of them non-white, about white people?). The former I didn't see because it sounded pretty jingoistic, though I like a lot of the actors in it so I'll probably torrent it.

Haven't even heard of Girls.

I didn't think Argo was THAT jingoistic. It was a bit, but not like Zero Dark Thirty levels.

not just racelifting the main characters
As far as I know they changed their nationality, not their race. The rest is still horrible.

I was more annoyed with the CONSTANT SCREAMING than the possible race-lifting, tbh. Whole movie was grating.

There's been a lot of criticism of both movies, especially of The Impossible.

I did read an article about Argo's depiction of Iran (http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2012/11/15/mark-cousins-on-argo-iran-and-formulaic-thinking/).
But apparently all the outrage (what outrage there is) is about the guy who may or may not hispanic, so nevermind...
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2013-02-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people complaining about The Impossible quite a fair amount, but admittedly it's not a very high profile movie so a lot of people probably just don't know about it.

As for Argo I didn't even know about the Hispanic controversy. I figured you were talking about the way it portrayed Iranians, which was pretty meh.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-02-21 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
With all due respect, what lack of outcry?

The outcry was very loud and mainstream.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
While whitewashing POC characters is a serious problem, I think in this case where: The person in question does not ID as a POC, and more significantly WAS PLEASED BY THE FACT AFFLECK PORTRAYED HIM, I think this one is a non-starter.

In the case of The Impossible, though, that whole move is unconscionable.

I'm not sure if it's fair to call people hypocrites if they have a problem with one show, but don't express anger with a couple movies that, as far as I can tell, are completely unrelated.

Not that there aren't posers and hypocrites out there. But this just seems like an odd way to come to that conclusion. I mean, people are more likely to talk about stuff like this when it's about shows and movies that they've seen or that are relevant to their social circles. The focus on white tourists in The Impossible makes me a little uncomfortable, but I haven't seen the movie and I don't know anyone who has.

Hate the term Hispanic, but yes, I had some serious issues with both those movies and have heard people talking about them too. More the second than the first, though I think the subject matter of the first movie is more at issue.

I'm baffled that you included The Impossible here. I've seen shitloads of criticism re: that movie, including many people who outright refuse to see it. And I'm including myself in that, actually.

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2013-02-21 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
1) Everything I've heard about The Impossible is negative on race grounds.

2) Re: Argo. I feel like Girls was a really bad counterpoint to bring up. Say what you will about what Lena Dunham's actual goals are, but that show was marketed, and promoted by certain critics, as being widely representative of a general generation. Of course it attracted more criticism than a random Hollywood film that was marketed as basically a classy action/thriller flick.

But I have seen people complaining about this?

And I think the problem with Girls is that it claimed to be this hyper-progressive show, when in reality Lena Dunham cast Donald Glover as a conservative black dude so she can spit race theory at him. That's amazingly insulting.

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this whole thing. I'm half Puerto Rican and half Welsh, but I came out looking mostly white. I can understand how a half-Hispanic can easily be portrayed by a white actor. However, I am a little sad that there aren't more hispanic actors out there.

Of course, my Puerto Rican father saw Argo and recommended it to me, so there is that.
