2) She's said that she didn't write more POC into the show (especially in the first season) because she feels that, being white, she can't write POC well. Now, she could be bullshitting, I don't know, and I don't even know enough to make an educated guess, but if she really is telling the truth about her motivations, I think that's a pretty good reason and fine. Especially when many POC also feel that way about white writers. She may be trying to be respectful.

I've read that too. And granted, I'd love more POCs in Girls, but I'm more comfortable with Dunham being hesitant cause she's worried about not doing it right than just throwing some in as tokens.

And to be honest, that show catching hella flack for this before its first season was even finished when shows like How I Met Your Mother (which is also about young New Yorkers) gets through 8 seasons without a word on the subject, is some bullshit.

It's because she's 26 and can't keep her mouth shut and what she does desn't "look" that hard (even though it is) and it all makes other wannabe writers REALLY FUCKING JEALOUS. Seriously. I honestly think the Girls backlash is another example of women tearing other women apart on the pettiest grounds.

It sometimes worries me, that white writers and creators, should be that nervous over adding diversity to their works. It creates a bit of a scnerio where they are dammed if they do, and dammed if they don't.

It doesn't sit well with me....I think in a way, it contributes to the type of racefail we see in some movies, and media.

Yes, but at the same time, the dialogue surrounding the issue is very much "sit down, shut up, don't talk about it if you don't have the experience". Making the jump from there to "don't write about it if you don't have the experience" isn't hard.

Although on a TV show, you'd think there was enough budget to get a cultural consultant. Businesses hire them when they try to make deals with foreign companies, right? Of course this doesn't guarantee a universal correctness, but displaying an actual experience (as lived by the consultant) should be better than skipping or guessing.

That's what scares me the most, we don't need to resort to that, we shouldn't.

If white writers write and all white cast...then they are raciest scum.

If they write a diverse cast....then they are still raciest scum who got it all wrong, even if they do research.

I don't like where this is heading.

They should break the glass ceiling a bit and hire more POC writers?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much so, but at the same time white writers shouldn't be slowly silenced, no matter how 'good' some people may think that sounds.
