Sorry everyone, I sort of made the secret in the heat of the moment and didn't express myself very well. I think creating fic based on fanart is awesome just as making art or fic inspired by something is awesome. I'm referring to a specific situation where it went sour... someone wrote a fic with a lot of triggery content* to the artist. The artist wasn't saying to stop, but they didn't want their name/art linked to the fic because they didn't condone the subject matter.

* Rape/non-con involving a minor, physical/emotional abuse, etc. portrayed as a romance.

I can see why an artist would not want their art associated with that. I rarely go after anything that isn't someone trying to make a profit off my art (because people do try to sell my fanart and original art unfortunately) but I would not be comfortable with my art being associated with certain subjects and that would be one of them.

I'm actually a little surprised by these responses even without this information though, fanart or not, I think it's okay if an artist is a bit weary about what people do with their art, because yes some people will try to take advantage of that and many artists would not want their art attached to certain things.

Woooooow That sounds as awful as what happened with Brian Jacques and his Redwall books.

I was going to go with everyone else because I've seen so many creators go as stupid rants about how fanfiction makes one a bad writer but ...seriously sending a triggery fic TO the author that's just wrong.

Wait, what happened with BJ and the Redwall series?

AYRT

Someone who had a beef with his habit of making certain species Always Chaotic Evil sent him a picture of his characters being tortured and killed and asked him to include it in his book and if it bothered him to just "imagine them as minorities and not people".

I mean i can understand not liking something an author does but that is just plain passive aggressive douchiness and doesn't make them look any better (in fact it probably makes them look WORSE.) when will people learn that approaching someone rationally and calmly without being as douchey as possible is the best way to get them to see your point and maybe change what they're doing. That's not tone argument that's common fucking sense. "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar."

You mean like when people write/draw the same sort of stuff concerning Harry Potter characters and JK Rowling got upset?

If it is good enough for the original author/artist it is good enough for fanart/fic creators.

I'm glad I read the comments before responding because that is EXTREMELY different from what I got from the wording of the secret.

My original reply was going to be along the lines of

1. What artist is so full of themselves that they assume anyone is going to write fic based on their art? Seriously, the fandom would have to be REALLY small or the artwork displaying some bizarrely specific but very visibly present fetish.

and

2. The really effective and obvious way to get around this is to write your damn fic and give no mention or credit to the artist who asked people not to write fic about their art. I challenge almost ANY fndom to be able to dispute this, unless the characters in the fic are characters invented by the artist... that's kinda different.

But.... what you're describing is totally legit asshattery and really, really not cool to do. I say this as an artist with a lot of art I would prefer not to be associated with specific acts of fandom. I'd be absolutely throat-slashingly LIVID if someone used my artwork without my permission in association with their fucked-up fetish porn shit.

Doesn't matter what the fan-artist thought. She shared it, and then it was up to the viewing public to run with it. Pretty certain Karl Marx, Adam Smith, Darwin, and Jesus don't like what the fandom has done with their ideas, but hey that is life.

Sorry everyone, I sort of made the secret in the heat of the moment and didn't express myself very well.

why the fuck do people do this? have they not learned (if not for themselves, then from others) to ALWAYS sit on something for 24 hours?

it's fine to be upset about what happened but you were so raging that you didn't even make any sense. clearly, waiting for 24 hours, reading the incoherency of your secret again and realizing you could have been clearer would have been A GOOD THING?

instead, you look like a dick.

congratuations.
