there are fanartists who don't want people to write fic based on their work?

I can see this happening...

Fuck them. That's the same as any writer telling you they hate fanfic and not to do it. If you don't want the possibility of others playing with your stuff... DON'T PUT YOUR STUFF UP WHERE PEOPLE CAN PLAY WITH IT.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2013-02-22 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I once had someone write a fic based on a fan art I did way, way, way long ago. It was pretty awesome.

That said, I think I do understand where the 'don't write something about this fan art' mentality comes from: some fan artists sometimes draw scenes or w/e with something very specific in mind and they feel they may not be able to do the idea justice in words but are protective/particular of said vision...? idek if that makes a lick of sense, but that's how I interpret it.

tbqh, if someone asked if they could write a fic based on one of my fan artworks, I'd be pretty happy... mostly because I tend to draw/favor secondary/obscure/non-human characters in a certain fandom and I'd be happy to see any fan works about them, period. XV

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's how art works, though.

Everybody steals from each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I would honestly have to question the sanity of any fanartist who would make such a request because 1) the subject matter is not their property, and 2) who the fuck wouldn't be flattered by that, srsly! The only explanation I can think of is that the fanartist is worried the fic will be more popular than the art that inspired it.

Sorry to burst your bubble OP but isn't that kinda the point of fan-material, taking and copying and inspiring from each other with or without the creator's consent?

But I can kinda see where you are going from. It is a bit weird or strange when someone else is making something from what you see as yours (general yours), but just remember that unless the original creator said so, you are also making something from someone else without proper consent.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think any artist that makes that request is a whiner. Especially a fan-artist. Oh, so you don't want people writing stories about your art. You know. Doing that thing that we are all doing to our canons?

I think a writer would be in their full right not to acknowledge contributed fics and they certainly wouldn't have to praise them or promote them or add them to continuity of the fanart (if it is part of a series or something). But you don't get to tell people not to write them when you are doing exactly that to canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
No comment on the secret but clearly you have excellent taste in background pics, OP!

I READ A FIC ABOUT WAVES CRASHING INTO ONE ANOTHER OVER AND OVER AGAIN, FIRMLY, MAKING EACH OTHER SO WET, UNTIL THEY CALMED AND SUBSIDED ONCE AGAIN.

I'm kinda with everyone here. The only thing I can see them doing is requesting the writer not mention them as an inspiration. Other than that though? I don't think so...

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry everyone, I sort of made the secret in the heat of the moment and didn't express myself very well. I think creating fic based on fanart is awesome just as making art or fic inspired by something is awesome. I'm referring to a specific situation where it went sour... someone wrote a fic with a lot of triggery content* to the artist. The artist wasn't saying to stop, but they didn't want their name/art linked to the fic because they didn't condone the subject matter.

I mean, I guess it would be nice to have the artist's blessing before writing anything, but restricting others to write fanfic based on your fanart that was based on some other media... come on now.

This day has been so bizarre for me regarding plagiarism within fandom. I heard about Cassandra Claire for the first time just this morning, and I swear it's leading from one story to the next. Internet drama interests the hell out of me when I'm super sick!

+1 to everyone who says it's the same situation as was discussed her yesterday, about authors banning fic based on their books.

It's a slightly different situation in fandom because there's a general culture of being able to approach people directly about things like this and ask - and being denied the opportunity to write fic based on one piece of fanart is less bothersome than being told an entire universe of canon is off-limits - but on the other hand, the theory that 'If you put it out there, you can't control how people might interpret it' still applies.

(Re: the additional information OP provided...but yeah, if you *do* take the step of contacting the artist and asking, and they say 'no, or at least don't link back to me', that's reasonable.

here we go, people not understanding what the word "plagiarism" means. Go whine with book authors who get mad when people write fic of their shit.

Creations stop being exclusively yours once someone else experiences them. News at 11.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It is no different than Anne Rice fanfic. Original authors give up their right to exclusivity when they publish. Fanfic authors/artists getting upset about being fanficced is just fucking retarded. IDG how fanfic authors think they have a right to more protections than the authors of the work they are fucking ripping off themselves.
