(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)Seriously, how is writing fanfic for fanart different from writing fanfic for any of the other media forms out there? The only way anyone will keep people from playing in their sandboxes is if they don't put their stuff out there. If they don't wish to share, then they should make fanart for themselves and keep it private. No one is forcing them to put it on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)I think of a situation I had where I was posting some fic on my LJ. This random person started commenting... with comment fic that ADDED to my story (badly, they didn't have the tone or the character's voices and...it was just bad). I finally had to step in after about the third time and say "Look, I'm glad my fanfic inspires you, but you either need to post this on your personal journal or not do it because I like where my story ended and I worked hard on it and if I'd wanted that scene, I would have included it." I gave her a week to copy the comment additions and then I deleted them. It was a weird experience. I mean, that's great that my story inspired you or you wanted more, but seriously? I wouldn't scrawl fanfic on the inside cover of Harry Potter, why are you scrawling fanfic on the end of my fanfic? Fanfic away, but do so not here (and don't ask me to endorse it or link to it).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:28 am (UTC)(link)That is a different situation. Writing a fic inspired by another is one thing; however, posting it to the fic in question is another thing entirely. I think you handled it well. I likely would have screened it immediately, not waited a week.
I also agree with the not wanting to endorse or link other fanfic even if inspired by yours. I don't think anyone should feel obligated to do so.

Because some (most) of comment-fic for fanart? It is weird-to-crazy-to-borderline-creepy.

They have no leg to stand on.
Now, were it the artist's OCs and someone did when they asked not to? I can see a leg there, because you don't know if the writer got the characters right and all that stuff.
But fanart? Oh hell no.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)I agree with the fan art part. As yes, it is amusing that someone would base something off someone else's work and then not allow others to base off of their work.
However, I don't agree with the OC thing. Sure, it would be tacky to take someone's OC's and have them as part of your world. However, that's how original creators feel all of the time. I have seen so many horrific RPs and fanfics and the like that just butcher characterization. As a fan I can't even stand to deal with them, so I cannot even possibly imagine how an author/screenwriter/whatever would feel if he/she stumbled across them.
But still. It is done out of love and with no desire for profit, so I think creators need to suck it up and deal with it as part of putting their works out there. I have so much more respect for creators that say "I don't want to/can't see it, for whatever reason, but have fun with it, and I'm glad you are enjoying my work enough that you feel the desire to do this." than those who flip out about the idea of anyone playing with their characters or in their world. After reading the Diana Gabaldon thread yesterday, I actually went and picked up some books today by authors mentioned as being good with fanfic. Not that I intend to write any fanfic for said books, but it is the principle of the matter. Those are the kinds of people I want to support.

But eh.
Though I am of the mindset that, if it's out there, don't get your undies in a twist when people write or draw for them. It's why I roll my eyes and deliberately draw or find fic for series like A Song of Ice and Fire, because I knows it annoys the creators.
Re: I can see this happening...
Maybe you're reserving your judgment for a really super specific subset of people who
A) made fanart who asked permission from the creator first
B) and specifically said they didn't want people making fanfiction of their fanart
but that seems a little too specific.
