I think part of the Henry-related outrage is connected to this old trope that blood relations are somehow more special or meaningful than adoptive parents. As is, the Charmings all magically get along, but Regina and Henry is obviously abusive. It's an old hat, and it bothers people.

... if Rumple turns out to be related to everyone, it'll be interesting to see how they handle that.

I'd agree, but there are a lot of blood relations that are horrible to their children (or family). Regina/Cora, Ruby/Anita, Jiminey/his parents, Maurice/Belle, Anton/bullying siblings, I'd even say Geppetto/Pinnochio for putting so much crazy pressure on a 7 year old.

As much wrong as Emma has done, I'd at least say she's the who puts the most consideration into what Henry needs instead of her own. Not always successful, but several important times she has.

It's just that with Emma vs Regina, you have the direct comparison of birth mother and adoptive mother, and many viewer don't like how the stereotypically it plays out. The 'real' mother will of course be magically transformed into a selfless parent, while the adoptive mother isn't good for the child at all.

I'm not sure I agree, actually. :) I just think it's why people tend to get protective of Regina.

What's up with my English today? Fuck you, brain.

I understand! I honestly don't know what's best for this kid anymore. Everyone is so messed up! If I had to make up something, I'd say "Let Henry live with his grandparents, visitation with Emma, Regina, and Neal, and supervised visits with Mr. Gold."

It would help if the writing was better. Lord, as into the show as I am, its very trying at times.

^Same anon as above. Forgot to throw in Victor Frankenstein/his father for messed up parental relationship! That one was a doozy.

I think Regina is kinda terrible, but I have a problem seeing how she could have been a bad mother before Henry ran away. She didn't seem particularly terrible to him. Magically over protective? Yeah.

I just think it would be awful to be an adoptive mother with a child that actively states you're not his mom and seems to try his hardest to get away no matter how mom-ly you are.

Well, I think the idea of her behavior towards Henry at that point of time is that Henry already noticed he was the only one growing up (perhaps that all his classmates in school were staying in the same grade while he kept moving up) and Regina, in a bid to keep her curse, sent him to a therapist and made him feel that he was crazy.

This next part is just a theory, but when Regina was warned in fairy tale land about curse exacting a price from her, "a hole in her heard that can never be filled," I wonder if it was her capacity to love at all. Even afterwards when its broken, she admits that she hadn't known how to love "in a long time." So while she tried to form connections, and went through the motions of motherhood, it didn't really work. Maybe?

Trying to convince your kid that they're crazy if FUCKING ABUSIVE!

It's called gaslighting and it's a way to manipulate people and bend them to your will.

Also, she's a serial rapist - that's not an appropriate person to be raising a child.
