Any suggestions for clearing up complexion?

[personal profile] sirenssong 2013-02-22 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for random-ass questions. SO! Fandom!Secrets, I was wondering if anyone here had any pointers/suggestions for clearing up complexion. Whoever said oh, you'll grow out of it is a LIAR. Mine's not horribly bad, but I wouldn't mind helping it to be better.

I'm currently on Accutane, which works very well, but is super pricey and if you're able to have a kid you have to get a pregnancy test every month. Also it leads to super dry skin; I have to apply chapstick around six times a day just so they don't crack. So it's an option, but just know you have to be committed to it and have some spare change.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment by Eucerin is MAGIC for this - when I was on that medication years ago my doctor rec'd it and it worked wonderfully :)

I'm not sure how old you are or what your skin type is, but mine cleared up when I switched from acne cleansers to anti-aging cleansers. I'm mid 30s with very oily skin and always had better results with benzoyle peroxide than salicylic acid but still always had a lot of acne. I've tried Retinol-A, Proactive, and prescription antibiotic treatments over the years with no success. Now I use Olay Regenerist regenerating cream cleanser and my complexion has never been clearer. I still get a spot or two now and then, particularly right before my period, but nothing like what all the other cleansers and treatments left me with. YMMV obviously.

Ooh, I think I might have to try that. It can't hurt. And if it works, then I am a happy camper. I had some luck with Proactiv, but remembering to use it every day was a pain in the ass, because it was so involved. And I'd rather not have to shell out that much money on a regular basis.

Since I'm at an age where my skin is losing elasticity, I needed to start using stuff to help that and the extra cost was... IDK, it was more irritating than anything. I decided that overall health of my skin was more important than continuing my expensive and futile battle with acne. I'm a little miffed that *this* is what finally cleared up my complexion. I tried Olay's pore scrub first but that made things a lot worse for me. Their stuff is expensive enough that trying out all the cleansers wound up costing me more than some acne treatments but it was worth it in the long run. I'm also really bad at having to do anything on a daily basis beyond the basics, so finding a cleanser that worked was like a dream come true.

I recently started using the Oil Cleaning Method, like others I did have a minor breakout after three weeks of use but now my skin looks and feels better than ever. I use the castor-olive-tea tree oil mix. I also like to apply cocoa butter after I've rinsed my face.

This might sound a little weird but I've found tiny dabs of Gold Bond's anti-itch lotion (orange bottle, red pump) to be fantastic at getting acne scabs to come up quicker and it seems to heal the little pink marks quicker too if you keep applying it occasionally.

I always brushed off the pillowcase advice and just washed them along with my sheets but after my brother cut the hair that hung down over his forehead and started changing his pillowcase every night he noticed a pretty significant reduction in his acne.

I've been trying the oil cleansing method off and on, but I haven't been terribly consistent. I have both a castor and olive oil mix, as well as a coconut oil and sugar scrub. Maybe I'll start alternating, or pick up some tea tree oil to mix in with the first.

Ooh, pillowcase changing. Need to remember that.

Yeah I had a pretty rough start with it too but once I started doing it everyday is when I noticed the improvement. As for the tea tree addition: I's just a couple drops in a 1/2 cup to 1/2 cup batch and be careful not to get it too close to your eyes when applying. IDK if it helps any but I've found putting a dry towel over the hot, wet one helps keep the steam in long enough and don't give into the temptation to scrub the oil off, just a light rinse and wipe. I also don't know if you wear mascara but I've found applying the cocoa butter on my eyelids before I put on my mascara makes it easier to wipe off any mistakes or smears.

My skin always looks better when I'm consistently getting plenty of sleep.

Seconding the sleep advice. That's made a bigger difference for my skin than anything else. For flareups, I do ten minutes steam, ten minutes with a clay mask, ten minutes steam. I don't use a cleanser anymore, I just exfoliate with St. Ives scrub or salt. I found that the cleanser just dried me out and got me super-producing oil and breaking out again. Sometimes I use a salicylic acid mask. I've heard you can just grind aspirin into a paste and use that instead.
