Didja miss the part about Meenah bulling her until her brain snapped? I'm not a fan of Damara either but, uh, she didn't deafen her matesprit and break her moirail. Kuloz sees the two people he "cares" about most as fodder for the glory of his "god". Damara had someone that by Beforus society was supposed to look after her - break her brain and have her matesprit cheat on her - Damara isn't exactly rational or sane and she want's revenge, she has nothing to loose. Kuloz imo is more horrible because he knows exactly what he's doing and what he's sacrificing to Lord English.

No lie: I'm at a convention this weekend, and I had to explain to my perplexed boyfriend about the Grand Highblood (there's a cosplayer here dressed as him, complete with Faygo!) He asked if I made that all up off the top of my head and I was like "No. No, this is an actual thing that is a really huge plot point in the comic." And he was like "...oh."

I fear he thinks I've lost my mind.

I don't know. Religious fanaticism is easier to understand than Damara's shift, but I don't find it any more sympathetic. Plus, Aranea speculated that more happened with Damara than the Rufioh situation or the Meenah situation, which to me suggests someone working for Lord English interfered with her personally to make sure she was following the playbook.

I dislike Damara more than Kurloz, because she disappointed me more. Aradia was one of my favourite Alternian trolls, so I'd hoped her Beforus counterpart might be equally likeable. Gamzee was always one of my least favourites, so the bar was already set low for his counterpart.

Why not sympathize with both, though. So you can be a religious nutjob and not be a mysogynist at the same time.

Okay, yeah, I was wrong in that I'd forgotten about her interaction with Meenah. Mea culpa. However. If her intention was to kill only the people who had wronged her, I would probably be cheering her on. Wanting to erase everything ever from existence... no. Kurloz is clearly dangerous and not-good, and I'd rather not be stuck with either of them in a dark alley, but I have more automatic sympathetic reaction for "likely-brainwashed religious nut" insane than "spiteful" insane.

I think they keyword is "insane". Damara is no longer sane. :( I mean, I don't sympathize with either, but I think there's some clinical depression/serious insanity/Lord English-influenced shenanigans serious cocktail going on with her.

although, on the other hand, Aradia was a sweetie just like Damara, but that didn't stop her from killing Vriska and getting into a love-hate thing with Equius. The thing in common with both is external factors pushing them hard and making them snap:

Damara: Rufioh cheating on her, Meenah pushing and prodding, whatever the hell Kurloz and/or Lord English did

Aradia: Vriska killing her via boyfriend, hearing to the voices of the deceased + no hope of salvation, robotic body with blue blood

I actually feel pretty terrible for Damara. As much as I adore Rufioh (on principle) what he did her her was shitty. Same for Meenah, actually...

(Why are so many of my favorite characters shitty people... </3) Anyway, Kurloz is just...already crazy I guess? He's a creepy fucker but to me he just seems deluded. So basically I don't hate either of them? I don't particularly love them though compared to other characters.

I actually agree with you on this. I don't hate either of them...I like Damara more, but that's solely because I find her more interesting (I'm one of those seemingly-rare people who straight-up never really cared much for the Makaras in general, though, and I've always been a huge Megido fan), and I acknowledge that she's a horrible person. (I think Meenah might be my favorite pre-scratch troll, though, and she's ALSO a horrible person, so...)

I like Rufioh well enough, but cheating just ain't cool. And Meenah was awful to her, that's pretty much undeniable.

(Actually, I kind of relate, in a very tangential way, to Damara. The whole "being bullied until you finally lose it" thing, I mean. Not to that extent, obviously, but I sure as hell don't trust people anywhere near as much as I used to.)

As for Kurloz...I guess I was just never interested in him? He just seemed like Gamzee 2.0 to me, and I never liked Gamzee much (not to the degree of the rest of the fandom, anyway).

Okay this got rambly, but basically they're both nasty people and probably both deserve to be punched in the face.
