With a platonic male and female lead I understand not wanting them to be together in canon, because it sometimes seems like it's impossible to ever find a single show or movie where the male and female lead don't get together in the end or have explicit ~sexual tension~ and therefore becomes so predictable that it's a relief to find something where they stay just friends.

With two male leads, though, platonic romance is all over the place and shows and movies where the two male leads get together in the end or have explicit sexual tension is basically impossible to find. So people who whine about shipping male leads are just completely ridiculous. It's not like there's a dearth of platonic male friendships that never become romantic in media.

The hell is "platonic romance," though? Doesn't romance sort of imply non-platonic feelings? Platonic love, I'm cool with, because that's a thing, but a romantic relationship is what you call something when it's...not platonic. It's like the opposite of platonic.

Oh lol. I meant "platonic friendship". I fail. *facepalm*

Guess that's what happens when you reuse too many words in one comment...

Haha, I might've passed it off as an error if it wasn't an actual sentiment I've seen elsewhere. Somehow "romance" has been diluted to describe the intensity of a relationship rather than the intimacy, which is generally what I think of when I hear the word (and I'm pretty sure what it originally referred to). The people who express this sentiment seem to have no idea that words like "friendship" only describe the nature of the relationship, not necessarily the intensity (because lbr, "friendship" is pretty much the vast ocean between "acquaintance" and "lover;" there's a lot of room to move within a friendship!).

Sorry I'm rambling, this is just a pet peeve of mine e____e

No no, it's a pet peeve of mine too! I'm always rolling my eyes in frustration when I see people arguing that a fictional relationship is romantic because "omg X risked his/her life for Y! They can't be just friends!" (because...X wouldn't risk his/her life for "just" a friend? What?) rather than argue that a relationship is romance because it's, y'know, portrayed as intimate and passionate and romantic in nature and/or is layered with sexual undertones.

What about romantic friendships? Intensely close friends with no real romantic intent expressing sincere romantic feeling toward each other. They were more accepted in previous eras, but the sentiment could still be around today.
