With a platonic male and female lead I understand not wanting them to be together in canon, because it sometimes seems like it's impossible to ever find a single show or movie where the male and female lead don't get together in the end or have explicit ~sexual tension~ and therefore becomes so predictable that it's a relief to find something where they stay just friends.

With two male leads, though, platonic romance is all over the place and shows and movies where the two male leads get together in the end or have explicit sexual tension is basically impossible to find. So people who whine about shipping male leads are just completely ridiculous. It's not like there's a dearth of platonic male friendships that never become romantic in media.

The hell is "platonic romance," though? Doesn't romance sort of imply non-platonic feelings? Platonic love, I'm cool with, because that's a thing, but a romantic relationship is what you call something when it's...not platonic. It's like the opposite of platonic.

Oh lol. I meant "platonic friendship". I fail. *facepalm*

Guess that's what happens when you reuse too many words in one comment...

My motto is, "Ship and let ship." I don't care what you ship as long as you label it.

Word. Thank you for this.

This! Fandom become so much more fun when I stopped giving a shit about what other people shipped and didn't ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The only people I know who are against shipping Sherlock and Watson are people who are also against shipping them in the canon works. I can almost understand why they'd be against shipping the original characters (societal attitudes and the legality of it all), but even so I've never seen the problem if the fanworks surrounding take all of the issues into account (and most do).

[personal profile] funyarinpainahat 2013-02-23 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Au contraire.

I ship Holmes and Watson in the original canon but not in the show. In fact, I find BBC's Sherlock to feature the least shippable incarnations of the duo (of course, I can't speak for Elementary). Their friendship is so strong that a romance would almost compromise it, take away some of the individuality that makes each character so appealing. Plus John is so definitively heterosexual that I can't understand how the pairing is justified.

huh, i've never seen broship or brotp. but i'd definitely put those two in that category for me personally. (i'm a rabid slasher, but for whatever stupid reason those two won't go any further than friends in my head.)

Just for the record:

I ship them [tis fun!] but I don't ACTUALLY consider it canon. I am not crazy and do realize that it is possible to just be friends with someone!

1. I can't ship Sherlock/John because I have years of canon and Granada fandom behind me and I just can't do any Holmes/Watson (although I did briefly reconsider this while listening to John's BL voice in the Japanese dub).

2. Not just Holmes/Watson, I can't ship anything where a friend becoming a romantic partner would leave one character without any friends. It's too lonely.

3. It's not about the superiority of "broship" - friends and lovers occupy different places in life and I think both are important to happiness.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Re: 2 - why can't a romantic partner also be a friend? If a friend is somebody you talk to, hang out with, and generally share interests with...why can't a romantic partner encompass all that and also be the one they're intimate with?

Re: #1: There are people--I'm one of them--who were fans of Holmes way before Sherlock existed, and who ship them. In some cases, they ship other versions of Holmes/Watson, as well. If you don't, that's fine, but not all shippers are people who were introduced to the characters through this show.

I too have years of canon and Granada fandom and do Holmes/Watson quite happily - as lovers AND friends. Your idea 2) seems quite bizarre, and your idea 3): eh? I have not found that to be the case at all.

I mean, your prefence and all. Your reasoning seems off though.

Do I have some clone running around posting my secrets? O_O Not specifically for the Sherlock fandom, but I've run into a lot of pairings that people seem to think "ruins" their friendship, and I just boggle at them. My partner and I have been together for over four years now and we always were and always will be best friends. We just also happen to kiss and fuck and lounge about the house naked. I see no downside to this "romance" thing regarding our friendship.

(And I'm with you on brotp/broship - really? Since when do you need a super special word for BFFs?)

So you're saying you don't ship NickxMaya? Because if so let me love you.

I always had the impression that Phoenix/Edgeworth was way bigger, but then I never was in the fandom. Just been playing the games the last couple of weeks and sighing blissfully over Phoenix and Maya and how whatever their relationship is, it isn't about UST.

saturnofthemoon: (Sherlock - Mycroft)

[personal profile] saturnofthemoon 2013-02-23 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship this version of Holmes and Watson (it's the Richie version that does it for me). I do however ship Sherlock/Mycroft, so I have no right to judge anyone on their shipping/non-shipping preferences in this fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of indifferent to those two (I mean, I've seen all the episodes, and I guess I ship it, but it's not one of my favorite pairings or anything) but in general, I agree. Best friends are pretty much my favorite thing to ship, and I don't get this idea that a romantic relationship is somehow "lesser" than a friendship (and that goes the opposite way as well; I don't think romance is any better than friendship, either, they're just different).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
best friend romance is my thing too, op and I don't get the hate for slashing them either. especially the 'ruining' talk, like... if I'm in my slash corner of fandom then how am I possibly screwing with your portion of fandom?

If I take a chocolate cake recipe and switch out raspberries for strawberries ain't nobody going to eat that fuckin cake but me so step off about me 'ruining' it.

Your first point: thank you. I don't get it either. I can see why people might be squicked if they headcanon the characters in a more familial sense, but being offended because you think there's something as tawdry as romance going on between a pair that all parties agree to have an amazing friendship? Live and let live.

Your second point: I use that as a term for awesome duos in which *I personally* don't see romance chemistry, because 'I ship them' generally implies that you want a couple and 'I friendship them' doesn't sound like it contains a verb. (I use this term for m/m, m/f, f/f, and even family pairs.)
