I would suggest you consider independent, creator-own comics instead of work-for-hire.

Yeah, work for hire is pretty much what screwed Don Rosa over. But I think it's symptomatic of a more general problem, ie if you want to live as an artist, then you will have at some point to take jobs that are not perfect and deal with people who do not understand the value of what you're creating.
Don Rosa's example is pretty much the most aweful one because he put his heart and soul into these stories. If he'd just half-assed it, he would have been paid the same (possibly for less time) but been able to focus on other work. It's pretty much the opposite of the merit system.
