Good choice. That business chews up artists and spits them out.

Don Rosa is a god amongst men. And yet sadly. the weakest god. He should be a titan and instead he's just the old diety of a broken pen...

But we will remember him. And love him.

From someone who's working hard and studying to become a comic book artist... Fuck it, I don't really care, I just want to do what I love most, even if it's gonna screw me up in the future. YOLO.

:( Wow is that unfair. Poor guy really got screwed over...

It's a shame you no longer want to pursue your passion, but I can see why you'd change your mind. It sounds like a smart decision too.

I had the pleasure of meeting him and getting an autograph at a con last year. I don't think he believed me when I told him how much an influence he had on my childhood. I love him, but it is depressing how very little he's known and recognized.

I don't blame you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Rosa is awesome, and it really is a pity that his health problems have prevented him from drawing. A couple of years ago he was in my hometown signing books, and I decided to drop by an hour in advance just to see if there was any chance to get his autograph. There were already hundreds of people waiting and the line went through the whole shop, so I had to forget it.

Even though there were so many people, he tried to chat with everyone and sign their things, and he has always been really friendly with his fans. So, yes, I second the motion that he'd deserve better from Disney. I bought his collected works even if it cost a small fortune, hoping that he'll see some of that money, since he took part in making that edition.

then join the indy scene, or self-publish, or something

it won't be easy, but joining Disney and other big name companies to be used and spat out isn't the only way

take webcomic artists, for example, some of them have managed to live off of comics (they are like the 0.001 percent or something, but it's possible!)

if Tom Siddell could do it so can you, op

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
OMG a Don Rosa secret!!

Yeah, the fact that I'm this shocked probably means you're right.

But man, do I love his stories. As a kid I would spend hours at flea markets, digging through old comics trying to find some of his older ones. These days most Duck comics bore me, but his still make me laugh (and sometimes cry). That was my very first fandom!
That man should be a legend.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I understand this feeling OP, I love comics but comic artists are criminally under appreciated and underpaid.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Wh-wha-? A secret about a cartoonist/comics that's NOT about capes? And it's about Don Rosa? I like you OP.

Anyway, it doesn't have to be that way. There's also really sucessful cartoonists and publishers that don't go out of their way to screw artists over.

No offence, but if you wouldn't be happy as an comic artist unless you were getting tons of respect and recognition, you probably made the right call. No matter what their medium, most professional authors will never be household names or win awards at all.

i forgot what don rosa looked like, so my first reaction was "wait, larry david draws comics!?"

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
He's one of the few Donald Duck artists who have a memorable style. I start reading the comic and I know immediately that it's him. I'm so sad to hear that he was fucked over like that.

I generally wonder why Disney comics seem so unpopular in the US? Or is that just compared to Superhero comics? In Europe, Disney comics are all the rage. In German speaking countries, we have a weekly Mickey Mouse magazine, a monthly Minnie Mouse magazine (I occasionally buy it out of nostalgia... I read it when I was a little girl, but it was discontinued eventually. Now it's finally back again.), a monthly or so Donald Duck magazine, and then a huuuge collection of "Lustige Taschenbücher" (funny paperbacks) that come out monthly and contain about 6-8 stories, mostly about the Duck family because they seem to be more popular (the aforementioned Mouse magazines always contain an equal share of Duck comics.) And also a ton of specials and extras and god knows what.

Don Rosa and his obvious love for the Ducks he told stories about is like the fanboy dream come true, and I def. see how he could inspire others to follow in his footsteps just because of that. But... yeah. Then there's the rest of it. He's got a huge fanbase overseas and is one of the few Duck artists to even be a name in his own right, though I'm guessing that doesn't make up for how Egmont/Disney's been screwing him over.

This secret made me really sad :( Poor Don Rosa. He deserves way better than this.

OP, I get that you don't want to get screwed over by big companies, but there are other ways to create comics and get known. It's hard, and maybe you won't ever be able to live off it, but you'll be still doing what you love and creating. If something like this is completely preventing you from drawing... then your passion wasn't strong to begin with.

I would suggest you consider independent, creator-own comics instead of work-for-hire.

There's so much focus on the narrative of 'endure whatever you have to to ~follow your dreams~!!' and practically none on what to do if you decide that, y'know, maybe the shit you have to endure is -actually too much shit-. There's very little middle ground between 'suffering for your art' and 'giving up and selling out' and oh my god is it FRUSTRATING.

The point is, a) I like you, OP, and b) ugh I know that feel.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Don Rosa is the absolute best, and such a nice guy, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I have never seen a picture of Don Rosa in my life and I knew right away it was him when you mentioned the Duck family.
I can read other comics - hell, I still buy our weekly Mickey Mouse magazine - but Rosa's "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" is and will always be my unshakable canon.

Don Rosa is the best thing to happen to Disney since Carl Barks. It's appalling, yet utterly unsurprising, that it's gone this way. God, Disney are a pack of bastards.
