He's one of the few Donald Duck artists who have a memorable style. I start reading the comic and I know immediately that it's him. I'm so sad to hear that he was fucked over like that.

I generally wonder why Disney comics seem so unpopular in the US? Or is that just compared to Superhero comics? In Europe, Disney comics are all the rage. In German speaking countries, we have a weekly Mickey Mouse magazine, a monthly Minnie Mouse magazine (I occasionally buy it out of nostalgia... I read it when I was a little girl, but it was discontinued eventually. Now it's finally back again.), a monthly or so Donald Duck magazine, and then a huuuge collection of "Lustige Taschenbücher" (funny paperbacks) that come out monthly and contain about 6-8 stories, mostly about the Duck family because they seem to be more popular (the aforementioned Mouse magazines always contain an equal share of Duck comics.) And also a ton of specials and extras and god knows what.

Agh, I said Donald Duck artists and that's not entirely true. I just use the term when I talk about Disney comics in general.

In the nineties, at least, they were very popular in Mexico too. I collected them, and all. c:

They were pretty popular back in the day, especially when Rosa was busy defining Duckberg and everything else. We did study him a bit in our history of comics class, and our professor told us how Disney comics didn't have artists names on them, but everyone knew when a comic was drawn by "the good one" and they'd get all excited because they knew it was going to be a fantastic adventure.

It's not so much Disney comics that don't do so well here, it's children's comics in general. And for that, you can thank "Seduction of the Innocent" and the creation of comic shops/phasing out of the grocery store spinner racks. Thirty/forty-odd years ago, a kid could pick up a comic at the while mom shopped. But now, pretty much the only way to get anything but Archie is to go into a comic shop, and America still has this holdover concept that comic shops are no place for kids (while at the same time, figuring that comics are for kids. Go figure).

Price doesn't help either. Heck, I'm not even thirty yet, but when I started reading comics, they were a buck fifty or so--didn't hurt nearly as much to shell out six bucks for four comics as it does to shell out six for two.

It's comics in general that aren't widely read in the States. People here tend to immediately think superheroes when comics are mentioned, and they have more of presense with fan communities. That's actually a good question for comic readers though-why do they tend to gravitate towards superheroes/fantasy and ignore other genres?
