After googling some stuff about this movie this is the first time I've realized they were supposed to still be together? I assumed they were divorced because of the line about his failed marriages in the first film.

Really? I thought they were dating/affianced, broke it off, and then reconciled through the course of the movie.

That bugged me too when I first saw it when I was 10 or 12, but then my friend said something along the lines of 'wtf they're running away from dinosaurs, what you want them to stop in the middle of the jungle and say 'I love youuuu' and start making out?' When she put it like that, I had to agree with her. And now that I think about it I don't think Sam Neil and Laura Dern's characters kissed at any time in the first movie either. Guess 'Jurassic Park' is a no kissing or sex kinda franchise.

Then again there's really no better time for some life-affirming sex than when you weren't eaten by a tyrannosaur...

Grant and Satler weren't actually together in the movie, though? I got the strong sense she dug him more than he did her, and they were skirting with the idea of their professional relationship becoming more, but he never quite picked up on it until after Malcom horned in/dinosaurs almost ate her.

Judging by JP3, whether they got together after that or not, it didn't pan out. She married the other guy and talked of Grant as if she'd always love him but was too frustrated by him for it to work. So, again, I got the impression he was too absorbed with his work to ever make a viable relationship happen.

They weren't? I've always thought they were supposed to be a couple. Didn't Grant confirm that when Malcolm asked is Satler was available?

Yeah, he did. There were also hints in the beginning (she calls him "honey," he asks her about wanting to have kids etc).

I thought they were together, actually...? At least I always thought that Grant got all irritated with Malcolm horning in because they were together. Very "Dude, I'm RIGHT HERE".

Of course, like you said, doesn't really matter since by JP3 she's married to someone else.

I never thought they were a couple, just close friends doing science! together. I liked that she was relaxed enough to flirt a little and hang out with Malcom without it being some kind of 'make Grant jealous' crap, and that even if he seemed a little irked, he didn't do any sort of stupid caveman 'she's my woman!!' crap.

Seconded. I took his whole "Oh, are you two..?" "YEAH." exchange as posturing/protectiveness. Jeff Goldblum's character was a (mildly charming) sleazeball, he wanted him to back off.

Why do we need an on screen kiss to understand that two people like each other?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
This. Few things piss me off more than when I'm watching a good action movie popcorn flick and suddenly two of the main characters have to stop and liplock. It always feels out of place and badly timed. I love it when this doesn't happen (the Jurassic Parks, Tron: Legacy, and the first Transformers spring to mind; yeah, they kissed in the first TF, but it was at the end after all the action was over).

In the first book (not that those movies followed the books all that closely), Grant mentioned that he had a wife who died awhile ago, and Satler had a fiance who wasn't involved in the story.
