Christ, there wasn't any bagelhead craze. It was like three people that did it and they were into extreme body-modding anyway, and everyone else thought they were exceptionally stupid. Stop getting your news on other cultures from sensationalist garbage sites like Kotaku.

there's some pretty interesting material out there on the psychology behind it that i came across when i took a class on manga. i wish i could track it down again.

It's not just Japan. The U.S. has a highly successful genre of porn called "petite porn" where they emphasize how small and underage-looking the women are. The women are often dressed in young girls' clothing, have pigtails, play with teddy bears/dolls, etc in the videos as well.

Youth is fetishized in many, many countries.
