I'd at least give the 48 a shot before you decide it's no good. It doesn't bother everybody.

I wouldn't worry about it. 48 is a dead end, the Hobbit proved that, and 3D is dying off again. The gimmick will last longer this time than the last two times because of the cash involved, but it won't be around in ten years time. It doesn't bring anything to the story, and it forces perspective too much to make the explosions work.

I LOVED the HFR version. So many background details I didn't notice in the normal version. I wish more films would go for it from now on. Especially fantasy flicks with gorgeous landscapes.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. I had the discussion about which version is the most acceptable so many times before the movie came out.

In addition to making me dizzy, I think 3D just looks kind of gimmicky. It doesn't look real, just like those fancy 3D stickers that only have very few levels of depth and little to nothing in between.

If people want to see something in 3D they should go watch a play and not an image that is going to be displayed on a flat screen which is never going to look like it has real depth no matter how much technofuckery they use on it.

Maybe digital would be a safer bet then? I haven't tried 48 so IDK how that is (I have heard both good and bad though), but I'm not too fond of 3D either. Too bad it's dubbed. :(

I kinda think that was the point of the secret. Like the only way OP can watch it is digital and subbed.

I think it's silly that that's the ONLY combination that's not an option.

The 48 fps didn't bother me, although it was only available in conjunction with 3D around here.

I've heard that there are glasses you can get that convert 3D to 2D, but I don't know where one would purchase those.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You take two sets of glasses and put the left lens of one over the right lens of the other and vice versa. Then you go pay the 3D ticket price to watch a very dark, and still slightly nausea inducing, movie. 3D making you pay more for less. Doesn't it make you just love those hard working studio execs.

I've seen it in 48 fps and dubbed. Framerate didn't bother me but the dub did, which is not surprising in my country. (The songs! They dubbed the songs! It hurt!)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain. 3D sucks for me because I have glasses. And I prefer subbed over dubbed, but it would have been a 45 minute train ride to a cinema with 3D subbed, and 2D was nowhere to be found. I ended up using contacts (worse eyesight than with glasses, but still better than trying to wear 2 sets of glasses) in the dubbed version, and it wasn't that bad, but it could've been that much better...

This is how I felt when I went to see Biohazard in theaters. I could choose between 3D dubbed or subbed, or 2D dubbed.

Then Hobbit came out with above choices. My tummy was rolling. I thought Biohazard hurt in 3D. Nothing on the Hobbit where I even got motion sickness.

Man that is so annoying. =/

Curious, where are you from?

I really want some information on how 3D movies perform in countries that subtitle. It's not a good combination.

If 3D wants to stay, some movie conventions have to go. Starting with the habit of throwing giant letters in your face during the trailers, please.

I saw it in 48fps and 3D first, it was a bit odd to me for about the first 5 minutes, then I rather enjoyed it. I later saw it at 24fps and 2D, and I actually had to adjust a bit to seeing it at standard frame rate. I heard some people had issues with 48fps, but it was almost like seeing it live. Very nifty. I have a feeling it's not going to catch on beyond this, but who knows.

A lot of the stuff you see on TV is 48 FPS. Don't just assume just because some people are butthurt over anything different that it's automatically bad. The difference, that I noticed, was that the screen kinda disappeared and you were just looking at Middle-earth. Then again, I saw it in 3D because it doesn't make me dizzy.

I've actually heard more complaints about the 24 FPS, saying it looked choppy, with no motion blur, because it was shot in 48 FPS. And in 3D. I figure the way a movie was shot is the way the director wanted it to be seen, which is why I saw The Hobbit in 3D and 48 FPS, and I plan on seeing Star Trek Into Darkness in 2D.

I don't have a problem with 3D, but I hated the 48 FPS. The level of detail it allowed was too detailed and made the movie feel not fantasy enough and more like a long LARP session with good costumes.

If you dislike dubs, I'd advise you to go to a subtitled showing. I know I hate listening to dubs for new anime I see (some old stuff I don't care, but last year I bought Puella Magica and couldn't stand the dub).

I'm now waiting for the DVD/Blu-Ray to come out for this. I hope it has more extras on it, I love extras.

I'm confused. You don't HAVE to watch the 3D or anything fancy - you can just watch the plain 2D, normal frames per second. The effectiveness of the story is the same in all of them

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as that is released in your area. 3D only or extremely limited 2D releases are being tried by the studios. Mainly because when they offer a straight up choice between 2D and 3D, most people were choosing the 2D and making all those execs who insisted on 3D as the future look bad. Trying to cover their embarrassment by removing the 2D option.

I would very much like to see 48fps 2D. But we didn't have that option. I saw it in both traditional and 48fps+3D, and... yeah. Lots of issues with the 3D, enough that I talked extensively about it from the technical side.
