Does indie rock all sound the same?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep trying to get into this genre but I can't because IT ALL SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME TO ME. Every band I've been told to check out so far is indistinguishable from every other band. I'm not sure what the problem is here. Is there something wrong with my ears, or is it the fault of the people I've asked for recs, or is indie rock just really heterogeneous?

(And if anyone can rec any bands that don't sound exactly the same as fifty other bands, I would appreciate that.)

Re: Does indie rock all sound the same?

You mean if it's homogenous

and yeah indie rock does tend to have a pretty similar sonic palate and similar sensibilities. although I would say it's a little different across time periods (that is, indie rock from the 90s or whatever is going to be kind of different from stuff that's coming out now) - but even then, it still shares a lot of the same basic aesthetic sensibility.

IDK man, if it's not for you it might just not be for you. What bands in particular have you checked out so far?

"You mean if it's homogenous"

Yeah, that's what I meant. Please excuse my stupid.

I can't even remember the names of any of the bands (except Vampire Weekend, but only because I thought that was a great name for a band). They all sort of blur together into one big blob of whiny-voiced singers and pretentious lyrics.

Yeah, I don't know, it might just not be for you.

There's definitely things that aren't exactly like Vampire Weekend and that draws from a different sonic pallet, but I don't really know if it's ultimately going to eliminate your issues (especially re: lyrics). There's stuff that's less pretentious and... uh... weak, if that makes sense, and that goes in more psychedelic and druggy or more hard directions with more of a "lo-fi" punk sensibility, or more chill directions influenced by surf music and shit like that, I guess. Like, uh, Thee Oh Sees and... uh... other bands whose names I can't remember sorry I realize I am not helping you out much here with this but I have a bad memory for band names and I got rid of a bunch of shit when I switched computers

and you could always look for things with female vocalists that might be different

but at the end of the day, basically, yeah, most indie rock comes from a fairly homogenous social set w/ fairly homogenous aesthetic ideals so there's going to be a certain amount of commonality

I feel like that's something people listening to a new genre always experience? One example, I still have a hard time distinguishing 80's hair bands and their music.

What bands have you looked at already?

I thought that too at first, but I usually don't have this problem with other genres.

Like I told the anon above, I can't remember the names of any bands except Vampire Weekend. The all blurred together in my mind.

Some bands I can think of that don't sound as similar to Vampire Weekend are Alt-J, Fitz and the Tantrums, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Tegan & Sara, Django Django, Cold War Kids, Tame Impala, MGMT, and Empire of the Sun.

but that might not be what you're looking for -- possibly more indie pop/folk?)

the first song I heard from them was "Arribats a aquell punt", but I can't find it on youtube... but yes, "En el record" got me hooked...
(if you'd like more Catalan music in general, check out totCat radio stream -- which is how I found them)

(and then there's other bands, too.)

Try Gotye. I like almost everything ELSE he's done more than "Somebody That I Used to Know". But I am glad that that song introduced me to Kimbra, because her stuff is great too! Look into Gotye's "Hearts A Mess", "What Do You Want?", "The Only Way", "Eyes Wide Open", and "Save Me". But he also does things with other vocalists- "Noir Excursion", and some very unusual songs- "Thanks for Your Time" and "State of the Art" among others. The rest of Making Mirrors isn't really charting, which is a shame, because his stuff sounds so unlike the rest of the current indie rock/pop scene and it's good stuff.

Other recs, (including an over-heavy percentage of British bands from the '90s-'00s): Andrew Bird, Anna Ternheim, The Backsliders, Eels, Foxface, The Guillemots, iamamiwhoami (LOVE. More electronic/dance, but check them out.), Idlewild, the Kaiser Chiefs, Loney Dear, the Maccabees, Maxïmo Park, Trashcan Sinatras, the Wombats, the Zutons.

I don't have a good answer for you, OP, but... Thanks for the rec, everyone!

(Sorry!)

Well I don't know about Indie Rock in general (In fact, I don't know anything about Rock at all, save a few exceptions) but I can tell you that there can be a lot of variety in one single genre. The hard part of this finding out the songs. Admittedly, the only rock pieces I have known came from Touhou Project (a game) fan-songs.

Here:

東方 Touhou Techno/Folk 126: Lullaby of Deserted Hell

東方 Touhou Metal/Rock 281: Be of Good Cheer!

And there's more Rock and Metal songs in the suggestions list if you're interested!
