Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)I'm guessing it's because when someone knows your deepest darkest secret, you might generally not go out of your way to antagonize them.
Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
It's because the whole prank and Snape's and James' and Sirius' and Remus' actions regarding the prank were kind of a huge serious deal that must have had a huge impact on the Marauders' relationship with each other and with Snape, and their whole kings-of-the-hill swaggering mentality? Yet, "Snape's Worst Memory" apparently is set pretty soon after it, and their behavior there is implied to be their default, childish, pre-maturity, unburdened attitude towards life -- the kind of behavior that eventually led them to massively screwing up with the prank.
Basically, the way the characters interact and behave in Snape's Worst Memory makes no sense in light of the sudden retcon/reveal that all this was taking place after the prank. Or if it does make sense, it makes a very complicated and baffling sense that can only be explained with more backstory, but isn't. I've seen some fix-fics that do make sense out of it, but they're not the same as canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)timelines:
WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN:
October 31
-Voldemort dies. At night.
-Hagrid takes Harry to the Dursleys and arrives before sunrise.
November 1
-Petunia opens the door and finds Harry. Wacky hijinks ensue! Ha ha ha. No, just kidding, an entire decade of neglect and emotional abuse ensues. :(
WHAT WE ACTUALLY SEE IN THE BOOK:
October 31
-A bunch of weirdos in robes are all happy since the beginning of the morning. The are shooting stars and owls all over the place and also Minerva McGonagall has been watching the Dursleys as a cat. Nobody outside the magical world knows what the fuck.
-The Dursleys go to bed.
-Dumbledore, Hagrid and McGonagall leave a baby on the Dursleys's doorstep in the middle of the night.
November 1
-Hello surprise baby!
wait why were the magical folk celebrating Voldemort's demise in the morning when he actually died later that night WHOOPS NOBODY WILL NOTICE HA HA

Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)TBH I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been keeping an eye for timelines and such. My point is that, isn't this something editors (and, well, the author! She kept timelines for other books, didn't she?) should keep an eye out for, besides spelling and grammar?
