I'm not assuming anything here, but you sure are. If people don't have access, then they don't fucking have access, and they're not what I'm talking about. My first point was in response to the anon I replied to completely ignoring PC gaming, and let's be real -- if you have a PC and it's not a 10-year-old piece of shit that chokes on Netscape, you can play a fucking video game somehow. My second point is strictly about time management.

Please, try to follow the discussion before jumping all over me.

Assumption 1: a PC is not a console.
Maybe strictly speaking, it isn't, but as far as "a platform for which to play games on" goes, a PC is in the same category as a PS3 and everything else. Why is the lack of access to a PC any different from the lack of access to a PS3? Macs exist and aren't compatible with a lot of PC games, and if you're running an out-of-date OS (like I am), even some games that are Mac-compatible aren't accessible.

Assumption 2: playing video games can be done anywhere you can read or watch videos.
Just because reading and watching videos can be done anywhere or any time you can play a video game doesn't mean the reverse holds true. Like I said (which you apparently failed to comprehend), you can read a book (either a physical book or on a Kindle/iPad/Nook/whathaveyou) or watch videos (on an iPad/iPhone/Android/whatever) in far more situations than you can play a video game. Some people actually do have schedules that consist of working, eating, and sleeping, and very little actual leisure time to actually sit down and devote several hours to playing a video game.

1) Because you can't do your taxes on a PS3. If you have a computer -- PC or Mac (Macs are technically a PC, just a PC with a proprietary OS and parts you can't upgrade) -- you have a platform that can play games. It may not be able to play the latest and greatest, but it can still play games. The thing is, you also use it to watch Youtube, write fanfiction, and get into arguments on Fandom Secrets. Unless can only access this website from your cell phone, you already have a built in games machine. And even your cell phone can probably run Doom or something.

2) I'm not talking about physical access! Even I am sometimes away from my PC and consoles! Guess what? I'm not playing games then! I am talking about how you manage your free time in your own home. Maybe I should have been clear.

How fucking stupid are you?

Just because some can play SOME games doesn't mean they can play the games THEY ARE ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN PLAYING! Why the fuck would anyone care that they can play games that they aren't interested in playing?

If they can't play the game they want to play, they may watch a LP and then join the fandom instead.

The OP is saying that they shouldn't do that.

You're dragging up hypotheticals here that have nothing to do with what I am talking about. You can came up with a million and one scenarios for what a person might be interested in playing BUT THEY IRRELEVANT TO THE TOPIC.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
(First, I'm a new anon)

Irrelevant?
Are you fucking kidding me?

You're the one who's harping on the fact that they might have access to some games - that's irrelevant if those games aren't the ones they want to play!

You're the one assuming that they hypothetical game they want to play is one of the ones available on PC.

Fucking hell.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-02-24 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
And you're assuming that it ISN'T. Round and round we go, where it stops, nobody knows!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
If the game they wanted to play WAS available in a format they could play it on then NO ONE WOULD BE TALKING ABOUT THEIR INABILITY TO PLAY IT.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Also, with regard to point 2

Some people *literally* have no or very little free time at home. All their "free time" may be taken up by their daily commute (or they may have a job that allows them to read during low activity periods - night cashiers ect.).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
AND?!?!?!

You're the one who's going on about how if they have time to read a book they have time to play a video game.

I'm giving you an explicit example of how that isn't always true.

And all you've got is "Yeah, and?".

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-02-24 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
dethtoll is a dick-hole. always has been.

go wash now that you've had an exchange with him. no telling what you might have picked up.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
If they don't have time to play a video game then they don't have time to get involved in fandom, so that's irrelevant.

I don't understand why this is causing such a shitstorm. Someone suggested video games are much harder to get access to than books etc, someone else said "Actually it's not that hard" and suddenly there are dozens of people bringing up all these weird exceptional circumstances.

OBVIOUSLY not everyone can play video games, but who the fuck is suggesting otherwise?
